PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) — The country's most famous groundhog predicted an early spring Wednesday but wasn't willing to go out on a limb to forecast whether his state's Pittsburgh Steelers will win the Super Bowl.

Punxsutawney Phil emerged just after dawn on Groundhog Day to make his 125th annual weather forecast in front of a smaller-than-usual crowd in rural Pennsylvania who braved muddy, icy conditions to hear his handlers reveal that he had not seen his shadow.

Including Wednesday's forecast, Phil has seen his shadow 98 times and hasn't seen it just 16 times since 1887, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle, which runs the event. There are no records for the remaining years, though the group has never failed to issue a forecast.

Two years ago, Phil's forecast also acknowledged the Steelers' Super Bowl XLIII win the night before. This year, Sunday's game was mentioned in the forecast but no winner was predicted between the Steelers and the Green Bay Packers, who meet in Dallas for Super Bowl XLV.

"The Steelers are going to the Super Bowl," Mike Johnson, vice president of the Inner Circle, said just before the forecast was read, drawing cheers from the clearly partisan crowd gathered on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill in this borough of about 6,100 residents some 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a German superstition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early.

In reality, Pennsylvania's prophetic rodent doesn't see much of anything. The result is actually decided in advance by 14 members of the Inner Circle, who don tuxedos and top hats for the event.

The celebration usually draws 10,000 to 15,000 spectators when it falls on a weekday, Groundhog club spokesman Luke Webber said. The area was under a winter weather warning and while heavier snows and sleet never materialized, rain falling in about 35-degree temperatures made for a below-average crowd, said Webber, who offered no specific estimate.

a blond hair guy, a brown hair guy and a black hair guy die in a car wreck and go to the gates oh heaven.
At the gate, Saint Pete askes them all to explain the meaning of easter, then they can enter heavan, if not, well you know.
The black hair guy gets the first shot at answering, he says " I know what easter is, that is in November, we all sit around a big table and eat turkey and pumpkin pie and say we are thankfull for what went on during the year"
Saint Pete says "sorry , that is not correct, bye"

The next guy , brown hair is next he says " Easter? that is when we wake up early in December
and get presents under the tree and sing carols and celebrate baby jesus and good will to men."
Saint pete says " sorry, wrong, bye"
The last guy, blond hair steps forward he says " easter, I love easter, that is when jesus was crucified for our sins on a cross and we celebrate in the spring. He died for our sins, they put him in a cave and 3 days later, and he is reserected , he opens the dark cave after being dead, jesus walkes out and he sees his shadow and we have 6 more weeks of winter.
Saaint pete says "bingo"
and sees his shadow and we have 6 more weeks

I so love Ground Hog Day. Nobody has to do anything for anyone and federal and bank employees have to work, no 'war on Ground Hog Day' whining from Fox news...it's just a stress free holiday.

One year Phil mistook his bowwel movement for his shadow. Needless to say, it was a schitty winter.

Shubenacadie Sam (no shadow)
Wiarton Willie (no shadow)
Balzac Billy (shadow)

Guess western Canada is in for a longer winter. The eastern US, central and eastern Canada have already paid their dues.

Some astronomer has just informed us that due to the tilt of the earth, groundhogs should look for their shadows in March. Darn scientists are always trying to mess with silly superstitions.

Do keep an eye on other animal species, particularly birds, that have to build nests for the spring. In my own neighborhood, there is a flock of crows that has nested in the steeple of a local church every year for at least 35 years. The birds are noticeable because many of them have a distinctive white feather in the middle of the coverlet feathers (not flight feathers) on each wing.

A few days ago, I happened to look up at the right time, and above me was one of the crows, with some kind of nesting material in its beak. Freezes had already hit southeast Louisiana earlier this January. But to see this bird carrying the twig or whatever got me to thinking. Is it possible that the crows already sense the coming of an early spring?

Let's see who comes closest the earliest, the groundhog Bill, or the crows of Lakeview.
