UPDATE Verizon representatives have confirmed that, as of 11 a.m. PT, voice and data service has been restored for customers in the Reno area. The outage was caused by an equipment malfunction early Tuesday morning.
Verizon cell service is currently down in northern Nevada.
Verizon representatives told The Huffington Post that the outage is affecting cities in the Reno area, but that the cause is still under investigation.
Meanwhile, Verizon customers in Nevada have taken to Twitter to report outages in Reno and Lovelock.
The Record-Courier speculates that the outage may have been caused by a downed cell station in the Washoe Valley outside Reno.
