DIY Pedal-Powered Porsche: Build A Green Car (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/03/11 09:15 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

From Inhabitat:

If you can afford to buy a Porsche (muttering curses at you under our breath), good for you. For the rest of us, why not follow one insanely skilled DIYer's lead and try to make your own? That's right, this golden beauty was actually made by the hands of a deft crafter out of PVC pipes, cardboard and duct tape, though it sure doesn't look like it. Even cooler, the Porsche look-alike runs on 100% pedal power.

Can't afford to buy a Porsche? Why not make your own? That's what one skilled sport car enthusiast did, and the result was this absolutely gorgeous golden replica of the coveted boxter. And don't think there's a heavy bloc V8 engine sitting underneath the hood - this shiny number runs completely on pedal power!

The best thing about a Porsche is the Roar.

Actually Porsche built it's reputation on light weight cars with incredible breaking ability, this car has it in spades.

See the 550 Spyder, the car that put Porsche on the map, oh yeah, it did have a nice 4 cam, roller bearing, helical gear Roar too ;-)

In my younger years I drove a Porsche 911, with special roaring sound. I am a woman, so I forgot the name of those roaring mufflers. Then I was living in Germany and the Autobahn was not that much traveled like today. My highest speed was 260 kilometers, now I am scared to drive 80 mph. Back then it was a real Fahrvergnuegen. I know this is for VW, but believe me it was great.

Good idea to recycle all those old gas guzzlers. Save a classic car and put an electric motor in it. EValbum has some cool people doing cool things. I love that RX7 that smokes the gas Viper.

Folks should stop criticizing its shortcomings as transportation. It's a kinetic sculpture, very cool.

At last, a car that truly merits the bumper sticker, "Don't honk -- I'm pedaling as fast as I can!"

I wouldn't want to get in an accident with this thing.....very cool though. A plan for electric motors and a petal/solar generator system in the future would be awesome.

when the gas runs out in the next few years, we will all drive these things, and an accident will be a joy at 14 mph you'll just bounce back into your lane ;-)

I have an uncle who was so broke once that he fixed the fender of his Ford Pinto with papier mache. But I guess that's different...

Um...replica of a Boxster? Not in my world. Try again :)
10:23 AM on 02/07/2011
Actually the Boxster is based on the 550 Spyder, that had a bird cage frame, much like this car/bike, and was much closer in weight.

So in the real world, this bike/car is much closer to it's Porsche heritage than the lackluster Boxster ;-)

I always figured the Boxster a much-improved version of the old 914.,,a version a little less expensive and slightly more accessible financially.

Always a fan of the 911 :)

here's a better one--the glyde: http://www.hostelshoppe.com/cgi-bin/readitem.pl?Bike=1228255723 It weighs 65 pounds. the fiberglass shell is aerodynamic, and a reasonably fit cyclist can get it up to 25 mph. Seats only one at present, though...

The builder didn't intend it to be practical, it was just a fun spare time project. A hobby is a hobby, no matter how pointless it seems to other people.
06:55 PM on 02/03/2011
99.46 kilogram is 219 pounds. Not even practical.

get real, how long are we going to push about 4,000 lb death traps with fossil fuels?

...now that's impractical, innovate kids ;-)

The question is... can you pick up chicks in it? And would they peddle?
