Building A Green Economy, From Jobs To Policy

Green For All

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/04/11 03:06 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

"When you go from using food stamps and all of a sudden you have the power to support yourself, it changes the way you see yourself, it changes how the world sees you."

When Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins was 12 years old, her mom went from welfare to work and Phaedra's life changed.

"If you know what that feels like, you can't not want to do it for others."

Phaedra said Friday's announcement that unemployment has dropped means more people are now feeling that same sentiment. "It's not enough, it's not perfect, but it's a sign of hope," she said. "It means people are working again."

Phaedra, 34, is the CEO of Green For All, which works to get people back to work through green jobs. Partnering with individuals, small businesses and cities, and the Obama Administration, the organization is working to make the green economy a central part of the economic recovery.

Phaedra got her start in the labor movement in San Jose, California, fighting for airport employees and helping to establish universal healthcare for children in Santa Clara County.

It was there that she realized that while Silicon Valley executives forged ahead, many of the people behind the scenes were falling behind. She recalls one janitor who cleaned the offices of "people who made a lot of money" sleeping in a garage with several other workers. "The glamorousness of Silicon Valley doesn't translate to the reality," she said.

Soon after, in 2009, Phaedra joined Green For All, an organization that works to make sure people commonly left behind by the economy are part of the emerging green sector. Her predecessor as CEO, Van Jones, joined the Obama Administration to advise on green jobs.

"It really is about creating policy that offers an environment that's open to these opportunities, and providing information so people can access these opportunities," said Phaedra. "And providing a fun and soulful way to do it."

Phaedra said the opportunity to rebuild the economy provided by the recession was also a chance to avoid the mistakes of the past. "I don't want to be the kind of country that imports batteries and water from China," she said.

This includes everything from making sure there are basic manufacturing jobs in green industries, to establishing policies that encourage cities and governments to employ small businesses, to training small business owners to bid for city contracts.

In Portland, Green For All worked with a company which weatherized 500 homes, giving the contracts to small businesses which employed 100 people in a program which aims to eventually provide 10,000 jobs.

Addressing green economy skeptics, Phaedra said the numbers are hard to argue with. Wind industry jobs jumped to 85,000 in 2008, a 70 percent increase from the previous year. By contrast, the coal industry employed about 81,000 workers in 2007, part of a steady decline.

"The reality is [old] industries aren't working for most Americans, and most American's aren't working for those industries."

If we do go more passive, I hope those solar panels don't end up coming from China...

My concern with the community projects is they are being headed by the mega corporations. The same with the voucher system.
If private industry wants to take things over-do it the free market way-without tax dollars.

A little unfortunate for Ms Ellis, that the unemployment drop actually represents sizable numbers of people GIVING UP on looking for work. So no, they're not having that feeling you have--they're feeling even more despair, if that's possible.

I find it very troubling that nearly every day at Huffington Post-Green I find articles like this one, endorsing emissions of the worst Greenhouse Gases (GHGs). This company advocates Solar Panels the production of which emits Nitrogen Trifluoride (NF3), the fastest-growing GHG in our atmosphere. One pound of NF3 warms the globe as much as 9 tons of Carbon Dioxide. This company and the article advocate Solar Panels while irresponsibly hiding the dangerous emissions from the public.

HuffPo calls the company "green," despite the fact that this company's work, no matter how well meaning, causes massive emissions of the second-worst GHG made.

So whats your solution? I can see that you are being devil's advocated but the only renewable source of energy we can harness is the sun or wind. I would think the long term energy output solar panels provide would completely offset the amount of NF3 created compared to the TONS of Carbon emissions from oil.

Of course our level of energy use is beyond the rest of the world. That would mean living with less energy utilizing passive solar houses, electric cars, local agriculture, etc.

Sadly, this is nothing but feel-goodism.

"Phaedra said the numbers are hard to argue with. Wind industry jobs jumped to 85,000 in 2008, a 70 percent increase from the previous year."

The numbers are easy to argue with. We have 15,000,000 unempled Americans. Against that, any number under 1,000,000 is just noise.

so, you prefer we get gm to hire 1million people instead?

I don't know why you think this is just feel-goodism. These are real people with real jobs and this organization, which is NON PROFIT, was able to provide jobs for these people. They weren't getting jobs frommulti buillion dollar companies that export all the jobs to 3rd world countries, get tax breaks, pollute the natural resources, and slash pensions and jobs. Nor were they getting it from our govt. They got it from people that used their brains and got everyone together.

If the govt provided more support for these New Tech Green Energy progams, small business, potential industries there would a TON MORE JOBS. I'm thinking 85,000 jobs is a GOOD increase. And America should get it together and create more of these industries here so that we stop importing everything and start exporting quality products that not only provide jobs for people, but make our world more sustainable, and make the US a leader again. There isn't a magic bullet to employ 15 million. At least this company is doing something right compared to our govt and other corporations out there.

Was the computer you are using made by a "local" computer manufacturer? Surely you would not support evil corporations by using their products. Do you eat all organic foods you grow in your back yard? Do you drive an electric car built by a "local" automobile manufacturer? Not all people want to go back to a Medieval society in which we worry about starving every day. Do the earth a favor, save some energy by turning your computer off and get to working on your garden.

That must be why there are more jobs in Wind than in Coal now, eh?
12:36 PM on 02/08/2011
You must be smoking the sweet leaf. A quick internet search will show that your comment is absurd. Look it up yourself. Just cause you want it to be does not make it so. More wind power jobs than coal, laughable.
