Amazing Views Of Death Valley, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas & More (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/04/11 03:22 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

On this cold early February afternoon, a quick release from reality is just the trick to ease the winter blues.

Oliver Reik captured a super cool video of a flight over Death Valley, the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The clear blue skies nearly make us forget about the massive snow storms and canceled flights that have hit this week and that even though Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, spring is still weeks away.

For a quick reprieve, check out the video of open air and stunning views below.

The views you get on foot are far superior.

When was this flight took place?

It's very annoying that all the cameras are pointed toward the plane. Duh.

Death Valley is one of my favorite places to vacation. I've camped at Furnace Creek so many times I can't even count them all. The road runners will darn near jump in your lap. However, many years ago the burros used to be everywhere. Then in the 70's they started to harvest them for dog food and now you hardly see any.

There are so many day trips from Furnace Creek like Scotty's Castle, The Devil's Golf Cours, Bad Water, Artist Palette, Titus Canyon, The Devil's Racetrack.

Saline Valley and the natural hotsprings are nice too if you like remoteness.

I've seen burros hanging around Death Valley Jct., and there are many east of Mt. Charleston still.

That was a nice three minute mental vacation.

Why are planes allowed to fly over the Hoover Dam? We are such suckers, we spend billions on Home Land Security for what, cool computers for bureaucrats and anti-chemical warfare equipement for Fargo ND, yet you can still fly a plane over the biggest dams around?

The max gross takeoff weight of a Cessna 172 is something on the order of 2700 pounds, depending on year model. That is less than the weight of an average car. How much damage could that do to Hoover dam?

This was not a nice view over Death Valley, the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas and Los Angeles but a very boring view of a single engine airplane which flies around along with a monotone elevator-music.

Deasn't look like a very people-friendly part of the planet.
04:33 AM on 02/05/2011
It's not, but if you ever have the chance to drive from, say Yosemite to Las Vegas, cutting through Death Valley and the Panamint Valley before it is really something to see.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm from the claustrophobic East, of course. If I'm out that way and ever get brave enough to venture into some really wide open country, maybe I'll try it.

I wish I could've gone on a Grand Canyon flight. Was sad when they got banned. Mid airs in v f r weather- who'da thunk.

I recently hiked in the Grand Canyon and experienced barely a moment of true silence thanks to the helicopters that skirted the park, I found myself wishing for an even deeper ban.

I'm sure it's really cool to see it from above, but the sad truth is that two people enjoying a great view can impact the serenity of thousands of others.

Noise permeates our lives. The National Parks should be one place where you can actually get a sense of solitude.

At Grand Canyon West since it's on an Indian Reservation they haven't banned the flights and yes
there is seldom any solitude-always aircraft buzzing kinda sad
