UGA Mascot Dead: University Of Georgia Bulldogs Mascot Dies

Uga Viii Dead
UGA VIII in happier times.

ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia officials say UGA VIII, the school's bulldog mascot, has died after suffering from lymphoma.

Georgia senior associate athletic director Claude Felton says the mascot died Friday morning. He said there is no formal funeral service scheduled at this time.

The white English bulldog was diagnosed with lymphoma in early January, but the school said he had been responding well to treatment. The dog took over as the team's mascot for Georgia's Oct. 16 game against Vanderbilt.

Felton says Russ, a bulldog who filled in as mascot in 2009 and early in 2010, would again step in as the school's mascot.

Maybe they ought to try a Boston Terrier.  They sort of look like a bulldog but they live a lot longer.

The very first dog I ever had was an English Bulldog. That was over five decades ago and I still remember his name, Sparky. What a sweet, loyal, patient dog he was.

These dogs don't have a mean bone in their body.

RIP UGA VIII.

I lost a pet when she was only nineteen months old, and I still think about her. I hope this sweet little guy is in a better place now.

If Mark Richt gets lymphoma, I would probably feel bad.
When an unnatural breed of dog, that is only alive due to human intervention gets it, it is kind of difficult to feel the same sympathy.

The Ugas have been dying way before their time. Perhaps, the University of Georgia needs to look for new stock. 60 Minutes a profile on Uga and his predecessors who have led increasing shorter lives.

I would hope that the University would take the wellness of their mascot into account and get the next Uga from a different line of bulldogs.

I can understand wanting a pure line but if you don't spread the genes apart, this is the sort of thing that happens. They should have been introducing some new lineage a while back.

Though I'm a fan of the UW Huskies, I feel sadness to see that UGA has lost another fine pup to such a horrid disease.

Go on through the gates, UGA VII--Saint Pete and the rest are awaiting you with open arms!

if you love you animal, and it is outdoors, DON"T use pestides or weed killer on your lawn. it gets on their feet, and in their body, and the next thing you know cancer.

Our staff at VitaHound is a leader in researching canine chronic diseases. Dog nutrition and dog vitamins reduce the onset of disease. Lymphoma is common in senior dogs and is believed to be the result of the modern dog diet. Cleaning dog teeth via dog toothpaste may also reduce harmful bacteria in dog's mouth that may also enter a dog's blood stream.

I do think it's diet. Dogs are dieing so much younger then they did 20 years ago. Their food has less protein and more carbs in them now. Dogs don't need carbs for energy. They need protein.

These companies are short changing our dogs to make more money.

I agree.  My dog has erectile dysfunction, and I found it was due to trace elements of salt peter added to his kibble.   Not sure if it was added by the dog food company, since I found a box in the cupboard.  My wife is still denying involvement, but I am going in to get a blood test.
