9 Legendary Romantic Spots Worth A Visit (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/05/11 09:03 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

The Eiffel Tower, the Grand Canyon, the London Eye, Niagara Falls, the Trevi Fountain... a little googling confirms that these bastions of the beaten path rank high on the "top romantic travel destinations" or "best places to pop the question" lists that invariably pop up at this time of year. Of course these are all beautiful spots, embedded in our collective imaginations thanks in great part to movie magic--they are also devastatingly overrun.

Instead of seeking out a landmark as the backdrop for a romantic adventure, why not a good love story instead?

Each of these nine places harbors an irresistible legend of love or romance--even if you aren't in seduction mode, they are worth a visit. If your motives are more sentimentally inclined, a trip like this might just seal the deal.

Reliving the Plight of Doomed Lovers in Guanajuato, Mexico

In a city of endlessly twisting, tapering alleys, the Callejón del Beso (Alley of the Kiss) may be the most infamous of all. As you approach the site, charismatic children tell the legend of the daughter of a wealthy Spanish aristocrat and her destitute beau. Both were brutally murdered by her father when he discovered them kissing across the narrow alley, where each occupied a balcony. You enjoy the children's lively retelling--some even reciting the legend in multiple languages--and are advised to kiss on the third step leading up to the balconies to avoid a penalty of bad luck.

Initially I thought the main picture was of the Gum Wall in Seattle. Blech.

For me, Lake Como holds a strong allure. Absolutely stunning.

So subjective--for most folks, it depends on where they had the most romantic vacation of their lives, typically including knock-out sex for a few days--might be greece, hawaii, any of the spots listed above, or perhaps the home bedroom, the office, or the holiday inn off the local interstate.

I agree that some places, with history and nostalia, can have a romanitic energy about them. I like to create my own love themes and love scenes. For me, that keeps the stress and the balance right.

I'm not an expert travel writer by any means, but this article should not have been published without the Greek island/volcano called Santorini.

Period.  :)

Santorini is gorgeous, but if the destination is Greece and you want romance, history and beauty. I'll pick the Temple of Poseidon @ Cape Sounion, sunset.

Right now, I'd settle for just about any location there.  The last 2 trips were 3 and 4 years ago and I'm going through withdrawal.  :)

Hmmm, becoming more conservative with time? My first wife and I used to visit vacant properties, for sale or under construction, for kicks. My current and I just settle for variety in nasty and often shameful places (ie hotel stairwells). Keeps things interesting.

Santorini Greece should be on this list.

That's very nice, thanks.

Think I'll visit a few of them. Huang Shan sounds like it would be breathtaking, and there is a ritual too.
