'Super 8' Trailer: JJ Abrams' Film Preview In Super Bowl Ad (VIDEO)

Super 8

And you thought 'LOST' was mysterious...

Super producer and director JJ Abrams is headed back to the big screen with his latest epic, a highly anticipated -- and highly mysterious -- Area-51 disaster film titled 'Super 8.' The mastermind behind 'LOST' and the 'Star Trek' series reboot, he teased the new film -- seen by some as a prequel to his 2008 disaster film 'Cloverfield,' with a trailer during the Super Bowl.

The trailer, while still not explaining much, at least reveals some cast members, unlike an earlier, even more mysterious sneak peak. Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning and Amanda Michalka will star.

Abrams has vast experience in the disaster movie field, having written Michael Bay's 'Armageddon' in addition to his work on 'Cloverfield.' He's also the man behind 'Mission: Impossible III,' 'Felicity,' 'Alias,' 'Fringe,' and the upcoming TV show 'Alcatraz.'

Oh, JJ Abrams was responsible for both LOST and the last Star Trek film? That explains a lot. Both projects had holes in their plots big enough to drive a truck through, both had logical absurdities in the front seat driving the storyline (remember 'red matter'?). And both were great fun until you realized the writer could only do 'episodes' but would not be able to make sense of the whole. Get ready for more logical absurdities and disconnected episodes in "Super 8" then.

Looks interesting...but I can't help but be more than a little skeptical.

I didn't like "Cloverfield," "Star Trek," "Mission Impossible III," and I absolutely hated "Armageddon"

Never saw "Lost," "Felicity," or "Alias"....

Steven Spielberg has a much better track record, but then again, he produced the god-awful "Transformers" movies, and I would count those among the worst of the last decade.

Loved the story/idea of Cloverfield, hated the execution. It just gave me a headache. I'm over that whole "jerky, home movie, art house" camera thing

How many people under 35 will even know what Super 8 means?

Not me, 23, until your question prompted me to look it up.

Nah, he still owes a better explanation for LOST first before I'll invest any more time in any of his other ventures.

Lost was fine. I got the explanation, or lack thereof. You just can't explain everything.

Fanned for understanding that all the explanations for Lost were not necessarily obvious, but had to be read between the lines - sometimes going all the way back to season 1.

I think Spielberg's new FOX show Terra Nova looks more interesting

you're kidding right? it looks terrible

Well that's your opinion! For now, I'd just rather see the dinosaurs than whatever this teaser trailer is. I love JJ Abram's work, though, so my opinion might change once the trailer looks more enticing.

It's a Sci-Fi show.. that means it will last maybe 5 eps before FOX cancels it
12:37 PM on 02/07/2011
Fringe is still on! ;)
01:14 PM on 02/07/2011
I think if it was on ABC, it would have a higher chance of being canceled. They cancel 95% of the stuff they come out with early on. Like the other guy said, Fringe is still on FOX and going strong. It's more about the execution of the show, and Spielberg will probably make it last awhile

looks like your basic "monster on the loose" film

a train carrying mysterious cargo from area 51 crashes. Some kind of alien/monster/altered intelligence then escapes from said train, wreaking Havoc and spreading terror in some small town

elite special forces show up to try to contain it. People are killed blood is spilled everyone is very afraid

But in the end it is left to some scrappy group of average citizens (which includes at least one very very hot girl) ultimately save the day!

How did I do?

I hesitate. Most of JJ 's endeavours leave me unsastified (at best) or p/i/s/s/e/d off (at worst). I am still not over the conclusion of "Lost", which in my mind was a huge let down, and I could not stand to watch "Cloverfield"> The only exception to that is the Star Trek reboot, which was done with respect for the original series and perfectly cast too.

This trailer has a little bit of a similar feel to E.T. (mostly because the kid in the trailer looks a lot like a young Henry Thomas) and "Encounters of the 3rd kind" mixed with disaster movies...

I just don't know....The sci-fi buff that I am will probably go to the movies and hope for best while preapring for the worst...

You do know that JJ pretty much turned the reins over to Damon Lindeloff and Carlton Cuse in the second season of Lost, don't you? You really should go back and watch Lost in as close to one shot as you can - you will find a lot of the answers you seek. It was just too complex a show to fully grasp once a week, with an 8 month gap between seasons. Too many little things are forgotten that way - things that will lead you to the answers to most of the questions.

You should check out this site: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page You can explore a lot of the "mysteries," both unanswered and answered. I think you'll be surprised how many answers they doled out and how few they left unexplained. The connections are easier to make too. The conclusion of Lost made sense to me. The show was never about the mysteries...it was about the characters' journeys in a supernatural setting. It was always about the characters.
05:09 PM on 02/18/2011
Agreed, guitarguy22. They told the story they wanted to tell -- that these characters, OUR characters, were all LOST in their lives until they met each other, and helped each other find importance and value and meaning. The rest of the stuff was just amazing hooks to pull is in... the beauty was in how deep the characters were.

Felicity? .....Really? I dont think that falls into the genre of 'disasters'...But actually now that think about it, it did destroy Keri Russell, so I suppose thats true.

I loved that show and it didn't destroy Keri Russell it kind of made her a household name. Along with a few other people who were on there :Jennifer Garner (movie star), Scott Foley (now on Gray's Anatomy), Greg Grunberg (most recently on Heroes), Ian Gomez (Cougar Town). So many people.

It helped those people, sure. But after she cut her hair, ratings plummeted and the only time I've seen her since was in a couple episodes of Scrubs. Although she was in Extraordinary Measures..But according to IMDB, nothing truly noteworthy since.
