John Haggerty, Man Accused Of Stealing $1 Million From Bloomberg, Wants Case Dismissed

NEW YORK — Prosecutors say New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg testified before a grand jury that indicted a political operative last year on charges of fleecing him out of more than $1 million. But they're not revealing what the billionaire mayor had to say.

Mention of Bloomberg's testimony emerged at a court hearing Tuesday in John Haggerty's case.

City officials didn't immediately return a call.

Haggerty has pleaded not guilty to grand larceny and other charges. He's asked a judge to dismiss them.

Prosecutors say the Republican political consultant got Bloomberg to give $1.1 million to the state Independence Party for a party poll-watching effort in 2009, when the mayor was running for re-election. Prosecutors say Haggerty was hired for the work but used the money for personal expenses.
