First Lady On Obesity In America: 'Fast Food Has Become The Every Day Meal'

First Lady Obesity

WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama says she talks about her love of french fries so people won't get the idea that her anti-obesity and healthier eating campaign is all about "complete, utter deprivation."

"The message has always been about balance," she said Tuesday.

The first lady, who celebrates the first anniversary of her "Let's Move!" campaign on Wednesday, said she tells daughters Malia and Sasha that if they eat vegetables at every meal they'll "still be OK" when they're downing pizza and ice cream with friends on the weekend.

"The problem is when that fun stuff becomes the habit. And I think that's what's happened in our culture," Mrs. Obama said. "Fast food has become the everyday meal."

"We flipped the script. As opposed to pizza being the treat, it is the thing that kids eat every day because sometimes that's all they eat," she told reporters at the White House.

With the campaign, the first lady – who has said publicly several times that french fries are her favorite food – is trying to flip the script back in the opposite direction.

One in three U.S. children are overweight or obese, putting them at greater risk for diabetes, high blood pressure and other medical conditions. The campaign aims to reverse that trend within a generation so that children born today can reach adulthood at a healthy weight.

So far, beverage makers, food manufacturers and most recently, Walmart, the country's largest retailer, have promised to cut the levels of salt, fat and sugar in their products. A new child nutrition law also puts Washington in charge of deciding what kinds of foods are sold during the school day.

To mark Wednesday's anniversary, Mrs. Obama was appearing on NBC's "Today" and "Live! With Regis and Kelly," followed by a trip to the Atlanta area to visit a school and give a speech. She also was unveiling a series of public service announcements to spread the word about "Let's Move!"

The speech, she said, will congratulate parents for pressing food companies to offer more nutritious foods and to encourage them to keep on pushing for improvements.

"Ultimately this issue is on us," the first lady said. "We're the ones who make the decisions about what our kids eat."

And what was that about french fries?

"I like to talk about my obsession with french fries because I don't want people to think that "Let's Move" is about complete, utter deprivation," she said. "It's about moderation and real-life changes and ideas that really work for families."

You might as well try to turn a ship around in the ocean by blowing on the hull with a hair dryer if you want to change America's eating habits. I like the idea of veggies with every meal, and maybe a little fruit. Go for it Ms. Obama, you are supporting a great cause.

It's hard to believe that there is not one mention of trans fat or high fructose corn syrup in this article, or in these comments. Actually, one single comment mentioned trans fat.

Which is how we know this is just a bunch of lip-service. When the government bans trans-fats, HFCS, and MSG maybe we will start to see a change in out nations waistline. But we all know who is paying for Obama's presidency

When Americans become conscious of what they injest in their bodies and choose to eat more home cooked meals made from scratch then we'll see a real tangible change in terms of the waistlines and general health of all citizens.

If the push is to not let people splurge into culinary decadence on occasion...the effort is guaranteed to fail. I think her comment about 'flipping the script' is right on point. If you had that fish sandwich everyday, you'd be in trouble. An occasional treat is not going to kill you.

Food is beautiful because it means many things to many people. It is love, death, belonging, family, ritual, religion, and political (to name a few).

I just read an article about diet soda by an AP medical writer which stated that fully three fourths of the salt in our diet comes from processed food. In my opinion, that landslide percentage is too great a portion of food where the salt has already been added for us by other parties.

If anyone has flipped the script, it's Michelle Obama. She's busy racing all over the country telling people how they should be eating.

Know something? My parents always brought me up to respect other people's opinion and don't try to force my opinion on how I live onto other people and force them to accept my point of view. Michelle Obama needs to stop telling other people how they should be living because we don't live in communist China.

If I choose to want to be able to eat sloppy, greasy bacon and cheeseburgers and I'm overweight, then that is my God-given right because I believe God granted the right of "free will." Now, here we have a "holier-than-thou" evil woman who is trying to force me to eat healthier.

She needs to worry about her own family and stop meddling with the lives of the American People. We didn't elect her as the leader of the United States, we elected Barrack Obama. Yet, she's acting like we elected her into office.

Americans are OBESE, unhealthy and cost the government millions of dollars in healthcare for preventable diseases linked to unhealthy diets, loss of productivity, and it is a public health concern.

Michelle is demonstrating common sense and trying to demonstrate that we should THINK about what we put in our bodies.
"
No one is telling anybody what they have to do but if you think you are demonstrating "free will when you spend your money at fast food restaurants or on sodas and chips or any other salty sugary foods from companies that spend billions of dollars marketing that food to you well then you might have more in common with people living under oppressive rule than you think

I am sorry, this post will be a little confusing because I can't stop laughing.

Is Michelle in your house, standing over you with broccoli in her fist, making choo choo noises? Does she have you tied up? Are you crying, lips pressed together, tears leaking from squeezed-together eyelids as you desperately shake your head "no"? Has she locked your refrigerator up, threatened to slash your tires should you head to McDonald's, or blocked the phone number to Pizza Hut delivery?

Evil, evil woman! FORCING you to eat healthy!!

Are you? Since the insidious inception of Let's Move...are you eating healthy?

Let me guess........YOU ARE NOT. And that's OK. I don't care. No one on this thread cares if you do. But I care about me. I care that I have healthier choices, that grocery stores are being pressured into offering healthy meals for less money. I care that farmers who want to do the right thing will be able to get support so they can grow organic hormone-free produce in competition with the big factory farms that supply McDonalds.

No one is stopping you from your cheeseburger. I love cheeseburgers! YAY CHEESEBURGERS! But I also love that, because of Michelle, we will be able to make more informed choices about our diets. More information is freedom.

The problem isn't science always being wrong, the problem is the you don't understand science. Science isn't some received text handed down by an authority, it's a process of discovery. The best scientific understanding changes as new data is added.

One thing that's never changed is that diets high in saturated fats, sugar and salt are unhealthy. Fruits and vegetables are good for you. More recent research has shown that dietary cholesterol isn't much of a factor, trans-fats are disproportionally bad, and mono-unsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial (if your total fat intake is kept moderate). The the benefits of a high fiber diet and the dangers of too much starchy food are understood to play a larger role than in the past.

Junk food has been called such for as long as I can remember, and there has been little change in what is considered to be junk. Refinements in the model of the optimal diet have changed with better data, but that isn't in any way science being "always wrong".

I think her ideas on food nutrition is excellent. And well over due.

Why such an unattractive pic of Mrs.Obama. There are plenty out there that are so much better. Why would Huff Post editor choose this one to highlight her campaign. So many in the media like to perpetuate the stereotype of the angry unattractive Black woman.

Hi blackmagic you are obviously not being judged by a stereotype. Many Black women are being denied housing, boyfriends and jobs because of the perpetuation of the "angry black woman stereotype". I know many sisters who are very much educated, beautiful and calm but are initially misjudged and denied. M Obama seems to be not loved by some members of Huff post editorial staff. They could have chosen a more flattering picture. There are more available. And her campaign on health and nutrition is fabulous and needed. We do reap what we sow and let us sow peace, equality and fairness for all.

The problem isn't fast food. The problem isn't any one particular type of food AT ALL! The problem is GREEDY, GLUTTONOUS people that eat until they can't see straight. I could eat a Big Mac for breakfast, lunch and dinner and still lose weight. It's not the food.

It's the INDIVIDUAL that has no self-control.

If you watch Spurlock's Super Size Me, it actually shows a guy who eats nothing but Big Macs. Curiously enough, he's pretty skinny.

A serving size is usually pretty small and yet it contains excessive calories, sodium sugars and carbs So, one doesn't have to have overeaten in order to have eaten too much, in terms of harmful or fattening content.

I happen to think that home made organic baked fries are not bad for you at all, it's the highly processed fast food fries that are poisonous! Doesn't McPoo put beef broth in their fries along with so many chemicals, preservatives, transfats, etc? Plus they're potatoes have been genetically modified, no doubt. Eat fries all you want, just make them yourself from scratch and enjoy. Try to choose organic potatoes if you can so you know they are not GM potatoes.

I support the FLOTUS' plan 100 %, but I happen to disagree with the notion that all foods are OK in moderation. With regards to fast food, that's like saying that poison is OK in moderation, because that's what fast food is- posion! Would you give your kids heroin or nicotine in moderation? No because some things are just inherently bad for you and should be avoided at all costs. Fast food is one of those things that doesn't serve you in any way.

So what you're saying- a kid can NEVER ever have a cookie?
01:09 PM on 02/10/2011
No, the argument is that processed, prepackaged foods contain lots of additives that aren't actually food and therefore are not good for your body. If I go to my cupboard and my fridge and prepare a cookie using flour, egg, real sugar, cocao, vanilla bean extract, and baking soda, that cookie will be digested and used by the body much differently than one that comes prepackaged from a fast food establishment. It's not that cookies or chicken nuggets or pizza (etc.) are inherently bad, they are just bad when they come loaded with artificial junk and a lot of oil and salt. Making those items using fresh ingredients at home is another story.

Pretty obvious Barry knew which side his bread was buttered on from the get go but now they have backed Michelle into a corner and beat the effin organic out of her too. Monsanto wins.....again. As long as it takes about a billion dollars to win an election, multinational corporations with continue to own our government.
