Garth Brooks Flood Relief

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Garth Brooks' December concert series at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena is expected to bring in $5 million for flood relief in Tennessee.

The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee on Wednesday announced the expected total take from the nine sold-out concerts. The nonprofit already has received $4.35 million and the money is still coming in.

The proceeds will go to The River Fund, a charitable fund within the Community Foundation. The fund already has given out $1.4 million to Hands on Nashville, the Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Committee on Relief and the Community Resource Center.

Flood victims seeking help should call 211 to be directed to a case manager.

In a statement, Brooks said he was honored to have been able to help.

He said, "Playing music has never felt better or ever felt more right."

That's great. But how much of it goes to administrative costs?

On Okie to believe in. Will Rogers would abide. No Coburn or Inhoff.

I never particularly liked Garth Brooks but years ago he helped a friends daughter who had terminal brain cancer through Make a Wish Foundation. He couldn't have been nicer - gave her his guitar. Remarkably, the girl survived the impossible. Brooks stayed in touch with the family and helped pay for her college education. I'm still not crazy about his music but get overwhelmed every time I tell the story of his kindness and generosity.

Not nearly as wonderful, but thrilling to a small community was when Tricia Yearwood was performing at the Northwestern Washington Fair and he was picking her up in his jet to go on to another event. Most of the audience had already started leaving (to miss the traffic crush) when he casually strolled out on the stage and started to play. No introduction, no fanfare, no nothin'. It was fantastic, Those who were there still talk about it, and those who had left early "to beat the traffic" are still kicking themselves. :-)

An incredibly generous thing to do. Seems that's how he's wired.

Awesome. How easy we tend to forget tragedies that happened not so long ago.

This tragedy was forgotten days after it happened.
