HP Announces New TouchPad Tablet (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 02/09/11 03:41 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

HP has just unveiled their newest tablet, the TouchPad.

The TouchPad features a 9.7-inch screen with a front 1.3-megapixel camera. It's available in either 16 or 32GB capacity models and weighs 1.6 pounds. It is almost exactly the same size as Apple's iPad.

Running HP's webOS, the TouchPad can also sync information with phones in the same family, like the Palm Pre. In addition to offering video calling, the tablet runs on a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and has stereo speakers.

The TouchPad is set to launch this summer, Wi-Fi enabled, with 3G and 4G models to follow.

Check out some images of the new TouchPad below:

Any product with a measly 1.3 Mega pixel camera is nothing but junk. If the product has a camera, it should be at least 8 Mega pixel.

WebOs is a good multi tasking platform but can it sprout some more uummph? I would bet this will help it's apps catalog grow much stronger.

I think thats what hp has been working on for the last year. I definetely am wanting to see this one up close and personal. I am LOVING that there are more tablets coming out. Just means they will all be better for the competition. Im actually really really wanting to see the touchscreen os's carried over to the laptops and even the desktops.

They're still not fitting my niche. I want this thing with something significantly more than 32GB. I'm thinking 1TB storage, 2-4GB operating, WiFi, 2G/3G/4G capabilities with front and back cameras and BlueTooth.

Yes, such a device would need to be about twice as thick but it's a primary device.

You would have to go Windows to get those specs.  They are out there.

You haven't even put your hands on it and you make that assessment?  I bet it can multitask, something iPad can't do.

NOPE, don't need to. I have seen so many copies/clones of Apple products from Microsoft, and numerous PC manufacturers over the years, to know that MOST (95%+) are FAILURES that were created to grab a small piece of Apple's Pie. They aren't built well, offer few features and are NEVER as creative as Apple's products. THIS product might be OK, BUT, history has proven otherwise.

Ehhhhh Im as big an Apple Fanboy as you can get but that's harsh. Yeh Apple deserves props for plowing the way again, but the OS system this new HP will be running on shows a LOT of promise. Think of it this way. If it's as good as I think it's going to be Apple will release a better one soon. :)

Much like Dell's Streak and HP's PCs, it's probable that this will be loaded with bloatware.

Well it IS webos so it will be difficult to load it with much of anything compared to Android, Ipad and Windows.

I have to respectfully disagree. WebOS isnt windows. Or Android for that matter. It's more on par with IOS and looks very promising. I was elated when HP bought palm because I knew this was going to come out of it. I can't wait to get my hands on one at the store.

This is great news for customers due to the huge array of touch pads coming out this year. In the last few weeks we had Motorola and now HP. The true challenge for any of these "generic" pads to take off is a sizable app store and distribution model.

I don't get the disparaging comments about HP products being made in China or India. So are Apple products.

Not till summer? No word on pricing and carriers?

While I applaud the arrival of more 10" tablets, the key word is "arrival". Build it, get it to market, and price it at a fraction of the comparable iOS/Android cost to make up for the fraction of available apps.

Then we'll have something to applaud.

I like the Hardware but at some point they will have to give up on the WebOS. No ones gonna jump on that OS. It just doesn't have market share. I'd go with Android.

That remains to be seen. WebOS is a next generation operating system that makes building applications incredibly simple. In the mid 80s MSDOS out ran Mackintosh for market share because writing DOS programs was simple compared to Mac and that's where the application programmers went, by the millions. Same could happen with WebOS if HP opens it up.

Open source did NOTHING for linux. Smartest thing HP could do is protect their investment in Palm and keep making WebOS better. Heck WebOS is what has me geared up about this thing. It has TONS more potential that Android. Well I say that before I see honeycomb. Well see about that as well. Buzz is its supposed to be pretty good as well.

MSDOS out running Macintosh computers didn't have much to do with ease of programming. It had to do with IBM's initial decision to have an open architecture, as opposed to Apple's closed system approach, which by the way they are doing again.

But I don't want what Apple makes.

Apple makes inferior products, and they overcharge for the products they do produce.

I can build you a better computer, for 500$ less than the cost of a premium apple.

Linux, dual booted with Windows 7, and an Asus motherboard = pure genius.

Well good for you. No doubt you place no value on your time but some of us fortunate to have a reasonably well paying job find that paying Apple for a well designed and generally superior product and support infrastructure is a more cost effective use of our time. Seriously if you think you could make and sell a superior product for less money you should do it. You may succeed where thousands have failed and make your fortune.

Whoops! I thought u wrote "anus motherboard." Perhaps my gut impression is that it'll just look ugly.
07:25 AM on 02/10/2011
Actually, I did and still want a Courier-style(MS) tablet(bi-folding dual screen) with an OS centered around content creation on-the-fly. If apple makes that I'd want it, but I have no interest in single large screen tablet.
