At the end of the first half of Butler's game against the UIC Flames on Monday night, Bulldogs guard Shawn Vanzant hit a buzzer-beater to give his team a 34-33 lead.
During the play, Butler's Matt Howard was battling for position underneath the basket. Flames forward Paris Carter threw an elbow and nailed Howard above his right eye and knocked him down. When he got back to his feet, his face was covered in blood.
"I've seen Matt look kind of like that before, haven't we?" coach Brad Stevens said. "He's such a tough kid. The last thing he wants to do is sit for any time at the end of his career. I'm glad that we played the way that we did in the second half."
Howard received stitches and never returned to the game. Butler went on to win 72-65.
