Stephen Jackson: 'I Get Techs Because I Want To'

Stephen Jackson Technical Fouls

First Posted: 02/09/11 07:34 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

Charlotte Bobcats small forward Stephen Jackson was ejected from Monday night's game against Boston after receiving his 11th technical foul of the season.

Apparently, Jackson wants to get technicals.

"No, I get techs because I want to. I don't care," Jackson said a day before the game. "I'm not getting techs for no reason. It happens."

According to the Associated Press, Jackson was one of the players shown in the video that the NBA distributed to demonstrate what would result in a technical foul:

"My reputation is the main reason why a lot of things don't go my way on the court," Jackson said. "I can't really pout about it and complain about it. I know I put myself in those situations. I went in the stands. I had those incidents off the court and I've got to be responsible for them. I just have to be professional and try to get through it."

Jackson has lost $222,000 this season and served a one-game suspension.

The refs are usually pretty good about warning players through verbal or body signals and it's pretty clear what behaviour will result in a tech. No wonder he gets them when he wants too, just like Sheed.

And that, Charlotte fans, is why your team is 7 games under .500.

the NBA plays favorites and all of the refs were outed by donaghy as corrupt. They show stephen as the example of what to call a tech on because they dont like him, its the same reason why when refs are instructed to start calling certain fouls more they put out a video of kobe, they want him at the foul line and they want the lesser guys like stephen out of the way

In honor of Jackson’s continued commitment to the community, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaimed April 12, 2008, as Stephen Jackson Day in the City of San Francisco... Along with Southwest Airlines, hosted the Stephen Jackson Essay Contest during the 2007-08 season, in which a group of students from his hometown of Port Arthur flew to the Bay Area to meet Jackson and attend their first NBA game... Speaks Spanish... Lives by the words “keep God first and never give up”... Favorite video games are Madden and NBA Live on XBox... When growing up, he used to wash dishes and bus tables in his grandfather’s soul food restaurant in Port Arthur

Full name is Stephen Jesse Jackson... In August 2008, launched his charitable foundation, the Jack 1 Foundation, with a series of community outreach events in his hometown of Port Arthur, TX... The mission of the Jack 1 Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is to provide community initiatives focusing on youth development and empowerment regardless of economic status...As part of the foundation launch, also participated in the grand re-opening ceremony of the Stephen Jackson Academy of Art, Science and Technology in Port Arthur, which offers afterschool programs... The Stephen Jackson Academy was originally opened in 2006 and was re-opened in a new, expanded building that includes a large gymnasium in 2008... In September 2008, the Jack 1 Foundation held a Feed The Children event at the Stephen Jackson Academy, in which Jackson and NBA All-Star Shaquille O’Neal joined forces to feed over 800 families in Port Arthur... Received the NBA Community Assist Award for the month of March 2008, a month in which he participated in a Silence the Violence rally at Oakland Tech High School, teamed up with Grammy Award-winner John Legend to raise funds for the Show Me Campaign (Jackson personally donated $15,000), and participated in the groundbreaking for a basketball court renovation project... The court renovation, which Jackson sponsored, took place at the Omega Boy’s Club in San Francisco and upon completion of the project was unveiled as the Stephen Jackson Basketball Court...

Good job posting this. Those who have actually met him think of him as a good-hearted guy who's easy to get along with. Immature in some respects, but he's overcome a lot and has done a lot of good for other people.

this guy has become my favorite nba player with that comment ...

he was a few years back with his good work in Detroit and how he had Ron Artest back when those racist fans in Detroit got carried away with their hate and decided to try and attack those defenseless nba players and got more than what they deserved...unfortunately the white media turned the players into the bad guys and we all know what happened afterward....but its great to see him doing sucessful years later

Only the white media? Wow, I can't remember any members of the black media running to defend the players in the Auburn Hills rumble.

Funny - What qualifies for a technical foul in the NBA wouldn't even get a second glance in the NFL and NHL. The more Blacks you get into any sports league the more sensitive the League is to these type of things. If David Stern had an NBA that looked like the NHL. There would be no dress code, nor would there be an emphasis on technical fouls. Stern is little more than a racist SOB -- who panders to the "over imagined" sensitivities of White Americans.

I had those exact thoughts when that player was fined for the "big balls" gesture! Nobody would have even paid attention to it if he hadn't been fined and splashed all over the news. Ridiculous!

I would add MLB and Tennis as well. The NBA officiating is not up to the job. Expecting three guys to keep up with 10 fast other guys, and stay in for the whole game is building in the fail.

The NBA needs to add another official, and work on getting the calls right, not making sure that inadequate officiating is met with proper decorum.

Put an official near each boundary so the base line/center court officials only have to run up and down half the court each play. Now there's four guys making it more likely to have a good angle on most plays. They wouldn't have to call so many "looks like a" fouls.
