'Born This Way,' Lady Gaga's New Song (LISTEN)

Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' has finally been born.

After great buildup and anticipation, the Grammy winner has released the first single off of her new album, an anthem for the disaffected, discriminated, downtrodden and those who just like to dance. Boasting infectious beats and less abstract lyrics, Gaga and others -- including Elton John -- predict this may become a legendary anthem. Many are saying that it sounds, and expresses similar sentiment, to Madonna's hit "Express Yourself." You can listen to that song here.

It's great!
Unlike other people, I don't think there is much similarity with Express Yourself and/or Vogue. Listen to the three songs one after the other right at the moment where you THINK they sound similar, and you'll see that they don't. It's like saying a musician copied from another musician because they used the same musical instrument.

I'm definitely a fan, but I don't get this one. It's SOOO much like Express Yourself, not just the sound but the chord changes and even parts of the melody. I can't understand drawing so much attention to a Madonna rip-off, it's an album track at best. Still wish her continued success, I'm sure there will be other tracks I'll like, but this one fell short.

I love me some Lady Gaga but this song is disappointing. The lyrics and the meaning of the song are all swell but this single is lame. And I'm assuming she got permission from Madonna to use the progression from "Express Yourself"? The similarities of the two songs can't be coincidence. I'm sure I could look this up but I'm realizing as I type this I don't care enough to do so.

Yes she did say she asked Madonna first and even sent her the song to OK it BEFORE she released it! Madonna KNOWS more people will go listen and buy her album NOW, LOL cuz all Gaga is doing now IS taking her stuff! And that HIGHLY disappoints me! :( I thought she would be better then that........and Born this way sounds NOTHING like I thought it would! :/

I think the majority of credit for the theatrics, glamour, rhythm, and style needs to go to the NYC gay club scene that really made BOTH Madonna and Gaga. Personally, I love them both. However, I do feel that Gaga is giving back to the gay community in a much bigger and public way than Madonna ever has. Madonna's support for the gay community has seemed to be more of a wink and a nod rather than the full-fledged advocate Gaga has become.

On a sadder note, for this particular song, I think the recent string of gay youth suicides was probably what influenced Gaga the most to make this song. Her music is adored by and speaks directly to gay youth around the world, and if this can help them fight on for another day instead of taking their own lives then it's fine by me.

Actually born this way was written back in march of 2010 long before it became cool to write songs for the gays and we know this because she quoted the lyrics numerous times at itnerviews and concerts throughout the spring and summer

I'm not sure when she wrote it, but in her interview with Anderson Cooper before the Grammys she explains why she decided to feature this particular track as her new single.

Another thing I'm uncertain of is when exactly it "became cool to write songs for the gays"... so if you could let me know what other artists or tracks started this trend, that would be great.

I agree Gaga is the most important performer now. What makes her rise above the rest is she was
picked on and bullied just like these other kids that killed themselves. Gaga just kept going and I
think her mother is not given enough credit for her success. Being able to talk to your parents is very important. I admire her for what she is doing for all these kids.

There's rumors that she may be a hermaphrodite (it happens, read Middlesex), but the real story is that she looked like a cute, healthy Italian girl in high school. I think there is a bit of a narrative with her getting picked on in hs -- i call that b.s. -- to me, she looked attractive and healthy -- she wasn't goth, punk or anything off-beat -- she looked like a nice girl from Long Island or the Valley, with long highlighty hair. Just a few years ago, she was doing pretty boring/pedestrian music in coffee houses. Quite the transformation. When you see pixs of Madonna in high-school and before she was famous, you do see an outsider. W Gaga, to me, not at all.

There is no shame in being gay. I should know: I am.

What I do have a problem with is the way biblical interpretation changes to fit the current social norms. The old testament is clearly anti-gay. The new testament thinks that if a large group of children make fun of a bald guy, a just punishment is to have them slaughtered by bears. (Kings 2:23)

If you're just going to pick and choose the verses that support your own beliefs and ignore everything else, why bother having a holy book in the first place? If something is truly that open to interpretation, it may as well be gibberish.

I could never follow a god that has such broken morals.
