Wayne Rooney's Bicycle Kick Goal Is Greatest Of His Career (VIDEO)

LONDON (AP) -- Wayne Rooney said it was the best goal he's scored and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson called it the greatest strike he's seen in 25 years at Old Trafford.

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart didn't even move.

Rooney used a spectacular bicycle kick with his back to the goal for the 2-1 win over rival Man City.

The United and England striker leaped to meet a right-wing cross with an overhead strike that flew into the top corner after 77 minutes.

"I saw it coming over and I thought why not? Nine times out of 10 they go into the stand," Rooney told Sky Sports.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who sat out the game with an injury, posted his reaction on Twitter.

"Wow....what a goal by ROOOOOOONEY!!! What a way to win the derby!!" he tweeted, before adding: "That bicycle kick was one dirty strike...POW...what a strike what a goal what a netbuster!!"

Even golfers Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy, playing in the Dubai Desert Classic, commented. McIlroy simply tweeted; "BOOM!!!!!!!!"

Ferguson said the quality of the strike reminded him of United great Denis Law, who scored 171 goals in his stellar career at the club.

"It was stunning," Ferguson said. "We've had some fantastic goals here but in terms of execution ... you'll never see that."

Nani had given United a first-half lead with a neat control and finish, before City equalized with a deflected effort in the 64th.

"(Nani's goal) was an unbelievable goal, but nobody in their right sense will even talk about it," Ferguson said. "All the talk will be about that winning goal -- unbelievable."

The goal was all the more surprising given Rooney's indifferent season so far. Coming off a disappointing World Cup in June, he'd scored only four league goals until Saturday.

In October, the 25-year-old former Everton player threatened to leave Manchester United because he was not given the assurances he wanted about the club's future.

Two days later, he changed his mind and signed a new five-year contract, with reports suggesting it could be worth up to $400,000 a week.

His form slowly picked up, and he has been overshadowed by Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov. He has a league-leading 19 goals this season, including a stunning overhead kick of his own in a hat trick against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Ferguson took a risk by leaving Berbatov on the bench against City. He gave Rooney a lone
striker role and it paid off.

But the United manager still wants more offense.

"I hope that is Wayne back to his best," he said. "I have to say, what I need to get out of Wayne and Berbatov are performances away from home that are as good as they are at home."

I hate that the video is not available, but am glad to see a copyright honored. The most spectacular bicycle kick goal I ever saw was against my high school team at Paris American Army High School in the fall of 1957. We were playing a French High School and had managed to hold on to a 1-1 tie most of the second half. With about five minutes left, they launched an attack. Their right wing got the ball; I pressured him and he centered the ball to their center forward who was running at full speed. The ball went above his head and slightly behind him. He went airborne, twisted onto his back, and bicycle kicked it into the upper corner of the goal. Our goalie never had a chance. We were so demoralized we gave up another goal before the end of the game.

You can't manage a bicycle kick goal without your back to the goal. Without seeing the goal placement is more luck than anything else. Lot's of people try it. Few succeed. Rooney was lucky.

So have dozens of others...I think Nani pulled one off earlier in the year and I'm sure if ESPN had the rights to the Spanish League we would see them more often....ESPN and SKY have a hard on for Shrek so anytime he touches the ball without it going into Row Zed it will be called sensational.

As of now, goal is still up on YouTube:

An amazing goal. It was a great set, though I think most strikers would have headed this particular set. Rooney's brilliance lay in not bicycling straight over the top (where the goalie probably would have been) but angling it slightly towards the corner.

He said it himself that it was luck.
It went off his shinpad
There's no controlling that.
Do you play futbol? If so, then you know that out of 100 times he couldn't do that again and put it in the same spot of the onion bag.
CITY WILL BOUNCE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's called a cross, a set is made in Volleyball. Also, the ball was slightly behind him and he'd have never been able to get his head on it. Also, he didn't angle it towards anywhere, he leapt, swung his trailing leg and made contact with the ball, it could have gone anywhere, the thing that was brilliant about it was that he made an attempt at the goal irrespective of how the ball was coming to him... It worked out brilliantly even if it did hit his shin pad.

In America, soccer's sorta like volleyball. It's a game we have our girls play. In that case it's pretty cool, but nobody wants to see a bunch of guys running around in shorts.

He hit it off his shin not foot! Still a good shot tho.

You sure it wasnt off his bum? You must be blind.

Try creating that much velocity off your shin, never mind the accuracy. Clearly you have never played the game before.

Yeah! it came of his Shin, excellent technique to even make the kick, but accuracy would imply that he aimed there, looked beautiful, but all he was trying to do was make contact and it either goes in or over the bar, or he misses.

Video was pulled. I could have been a new FA Premier League fan, spending all my money on their merchandise. Then I could be telling all my friends about how awesome the FA Premier League is, and how they should be buying all their merchandise as well.

Oh well. Guess I'll get my sports highlights fix by watching all the NFL, NBA, college athletics and professional tennis clips on YouTube. Hmm. I wonder if they've got Roger Federer's amazing tweener on YouTube. Yep. there it is. Later, FA Premier League! Let us know when you're ready to join the rest of professional sports in the 21st century.

I've got a bone to pick with FA Premier League who yanked the video: what's the harm in sharing 1:14 seconds of a video clip that everyone is raving about? Don't you want to draw in more fans?

It has become sickening to see the corporations being "protected" from the ones who pay them while the ones who chuck out the money anyway are treated like criminals for wanting to let others know about a highlight.
