America's Most Romantic Main Streets (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/13/11 10:28 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

The National Trust for Historic Preservation released their list of the most romantic Main streets in the America, just in time for Valentine's Day.

The adorable streets--some of them romantically paved with cobblestones--are ideal for strolling lovers young and old.

The trust left off a few streets, in our opinion, like Chapel Hill's famous Franklin Street, which teams with local coffee shops and chain stores alike, all while preserving an individual feel.

What are your favorite Main streets? What failed to make the cut?

Take a look at the slideshow below and let us know what they left out.

My vote goes to Lake Placid. You cannot beat the intimate setting with boutique shops, eateries and the Adirondack Mountains and Mirror Lake surrounding.

Main Street Lake Placid gets my vote! Just beautiful. Especially near the bandshell in the park! My husband and I were engaged by the edge of Mirror Lake in this park Christmas Eve 1996. Snowflakes were flying....it was just so romantic!

I LOVE MIDDLETOWN'S MAIN STREET! I wish that they would let me use it for my wedding. I'm just going to have to find a Connecticut wedding venue that can compare.

I hate to say this. I really, really hate to say this. But: Richmond Indiana's "Main Street" is not really all that romantic. The street formerly paved over and onced called the "Promenade" back in the 70's to late 90's has too many empty and abandoned stores, and the ones that are there are hardly conducive to romance. Compared to, say, Kirkwood Ave. in Bloomington, Indiana, the streets around the fun spots in Broad Ripple in Indianapolis, or the main street in Nashville, Indiana, Richmond's main street is decidedly unromantic. Go to Google maps and see for yourself.

With a little help, it *could* be romantic and/or fun. When the Rose Festival was big in the 80's, that strip (converted to a pedestrian walkway in those years) was happening and fun. But it's simply not that way nowadays, sadly enough.

Several nice area's around Cincinnati worth trying.

Hyde Park and the smaller O'Bryronville area, and Oakley just north.
Wyoming, Lebanon, Clifton, Over the Rhine,
and across in northern Kentucky Covington
and Newport.

Mt. Adams just east of downtown is very hilly
and has lots of small and mostly fixed up
older homes and some shops.

Where are all the 'Main Streets' that look like ones that exist in movies? None of these look particularly romantic..

Tinker Street, Woodstock, NY. Old store fronts and a large white church behind the village green. All there long before the advent of the 60's or rock n roll. Woodstock certainly has its rock n roll flavor and I love that about my little town but there is so much more history that began hundreds of years before with tinkers and tanners and loggers and farmers, then artists and folks from the city looking for a respite from the summer heat. Two old fashioned swimming holes in town, one at the end of my back yard.

Sadly the building that is mostly out of shot in the Middletown CT picture just fell down because of the weight of snow. Having said that, (apart from the collapsing buildings) it is a nice place for a date

All very nice, and there are hundreds more in America.

My only disagreement with those mentioned is with the Plaza in Kansas City. We lived in KC during the 90's and we really liked the town...a lot. However, the Plaza would hardly qualify as a "romantic Main street". It's upscale shop and restaurants are housed in newer buildings not at all reminiscent of a Main Street atmosphere.

Since ALL these streets are in towns east of the Mississippi, I expect a West-Of-The-Mississippi edition to be posted soon.
