Groupon Users Furious About FTD Flower Deal

Groupon

The online coupon site Groupon.com and flower company FTD Group Inc. are offering refunds after getting complaints that a Valentine's Day flower deal wasn't so sweet.

Both companies said they didn't do anything wrong, but they responded to Internet complaints that FTD inflated prices for some Groupon customers who used a coupon for $20 off an FTD flower purchase of $40 or more.

The problem surfaced when several Groupon customers found the flowers they bought were priced lower as sale items on FTD's own website. They complained on the Groupon site and the Internet that FTD was making up for the Groupon discount by jacking up the prices.

But FTD Group Inc. President Rob Apatoff said in an interview on Sunday that wasn't the case. He said it was clear on the sites that the coupon didn't apply to sale items.

Still, Apatoff said the Downers Grove, Ill., company will credit the customers' accounts to give them the sale price, even if they don't ask for it. Both companies also say they will make full refunds if people aren't satisfied.

"At no time did we inflate any prices. Absolutely not," Apatoff said. "Because there was some confusion with a few, we decided to step up and do the right thing to make sure everybody was happy."

Even with the higher price on the Groupon site, Groupon customers always got a better deal with the $20 coupon than buying from the FTD site, Apatoff said. Discounts on the FTD site were $5 to $10 lower than the price on the Groupon site, he said.

Groupon Inc. officials started seeing the complaints on Thursday and contacted FTD about the problem, Groupon.com President Rob Solomon said on Sunday. Together, they decided to credit the accounts of people who bought the sale items through Groupon, giving them the difference between the sale price and the price that was on the Groupon site, he said. The companies also put the FTD sale prices on the Groupon site, he said.

"To make this right, we've worked with FTD to make sure that your Groupon can be used on any item with the sale price," Solomon said.

Both companies said "tens of thousands" of people bought FTD flowers through the Groupon site, but Solomon estimated that only a few hundred bought the sale items and would get the credit to their charge accounts.

At any given time, five to 17 items of the 500 on the FTD site are on sale, Apatoff said.

Groupon has people who monitor Internet prices on coupon items to make sure there are no discrepancies, and they catch differences in most cases, Solomon said. He called the FTD case a rare exception.

The problem is the second time in a week in which Internet complaints forced Groupon to change course. The company pulled television ads less than a week after they first aired during the Super Bowl when they were criticized on Facebook and Twitter.

In one of the commercials, actor Timothy Hutton says "the people in Tibet are in trouble, their culture is in jeopardy," as pictures of Tibet are shown on the screen. The punch line? It turns out he's talking about a fish curry deal Groupon offered.

"We hate that we offended people, and we're very sorry that we did – it's the last thing we wanted," co-founder Andrew Mason said in a posting on the company's site.

The best way to handle this kind of situation is clearly in your own hands.

Buy directly from your own local florist and cut FTD out of the picture entirely. The reality about FTD is that they skim almost 30% off the local florists sales and are quickly putting many florists out of business. There is no reason for these order skimmers - such as FTD, Pro-flowers, 1-800 Flowers or others to exist, other than the fact that they market heavily and people fall for their advertising.

The internet now allows you to find locally owned florists in any city/town you wish to send flowers to. Google 'florist & the town you are interested in, and you will find contact info for independently owned florists. Order direct from them. You will not only receive better customer service - you will also receive better deals. As it is all of these order gathers skim off the florists and this gets passed along to the consumer in the end.

I check for groupon clone from this post. i'm satisfied with this groupon user FTD flower deal. Most companies only make a small profit for whatever it is that they sell whether it is because of the raw good prices, storage or supply chain. by http://grouponclone.contussupport.com/

F.T.D. = F^$% .the.deal !

Deal, smeal...
I ordered flowers for my fiancee 1 month - 1 MONTH before 2/14 through AA. i thought it was a great deal. then came valentine's day - not only was NOTHING delivered day of when i called their customer service #, i stayed on hold for almost 1 hour (thats what bluetooth is for) only to be told they was some bs mixup with florist and that they were on their way. Shortly thereafter, I received a CANCELLATION email stated that due to timing of order , there were no florists available in my area (I live in Boston and ordered 1 month ahead)! What kind of company operates like that? I shouldve picked up some roses from the gas station the night before. Don't waste your time or money with FTD.

Or any of the 'order gatherers such as 1-800 Flowers or Pro-flowers. Contact your local florist directly. You will receive far superior customer service and help keep these businesses in existence. All of these order gatherer companies are, in fact, putting florists out of business since they skim so much off of the sales. Corporate greed.

It is amazing how much "news" has become akin to blood in the water for sharks. One story is scandalous and gets buzz so now there has to be a pile on. Most businesses that use coupons have a business model that is designed around "regular" price inflation. Do people really think that companies have such a high mark up that they could knock 50% off of something and still turn a profit simply through the concept of increased volume? Ridiculous.

Most companies only make a small profit for whatever it is that they sell whether it is because of the raw good prices, storage, supply chain or a line of middle men taking cuts here and there. All of the up and down pricing that happens is just to play the angles and/or trick the customer into thinking it is a deal. Come on people, use your heads. You don't need a degree in marketing to know this type of stuff.

This is the oldest shell game going. Merchants quite often inflate regular prices before offering discounts. This is why I will drive ten miles to shop for groceries in a predominately Hispanic area when there is a Jewel store within a mile of my house. I'm tired of their two for one specials, when it is really 1.5 for one and paying $1.00 for one green bell pepper.

This is such a NON story. FTD had their own sale going on at the same time as they did a promotional deal with groupon - wow what a scandal. The groupon price was still better than any of their in house sale prices (not that they are required to do that unless it's part of their deal with groupon.)

"OMG i could have gotten a worse deal over here on the same thing!" really? wan'a tissue? Not everyone does groupon - FTD was dumb to not say exactly that to the whiners, and Groupon was even dumber, because now the expectation (at least for their little customer base) is that no one else can be getting a discount at the same time as they are, so the only time to work with groupon is when you wouldn't have a sale or discount otherwise, so no more groupon flower deals on valentines. oops.

What better way to help a small business than by giving half of its profit margin to Groupon?
08:33 AM on 02/15/2011
I agree Yotta!

But it's not about helping small business, it's about helping Groupon (and their investors) become a $20 Billion dollar company instead of only $6 Billion :)

dont ask Groupon to feature you then! and if you do, for the love of God please don't inflate pricing!

Few and far between. The larger companies get the more they control the market and manipulate consumers. Did you know that gasoline stations all receive spot prices for oil several times a day via a satellite feed so they can adjust their prices in unison. They used to call that price-fixing.

Buy directly from your local florist or google the city/town you want flowers delivered in.... ex. florist & Chicago, Il. Contact the local, independently owned florists - cut out FTD, 1-800 Flowers, Pro-Flowers, etc. Guess what? All of these alternative 'order gatherer' sites are ultimately owned by FTD or Teleflora anyway.

Cut them out - they are simply brokers which take up to 30% of all sales from the independent florists and are contributing to many of these small businesses going out of business. They're sales people also know little about the industry and are pretty clueless... they're out of hit #'s and that's about it.

Nope.
I have used Groupon more than 30 times. All for restaurant discounts.
Not one problem and a good deal was had.

My ex-wife uses them all the time for health and beauty related products like mani-pedis, spas, massages, etc., and is completely satisfied.

All of FTDs flowers come from South America where there are sprayed with tons of pesticides and chemicals. Hope you have your medical insurance paid if you buy these toxic things. Buy Organic USA flowers. They may cost more, but you may save the life of someone you love.
