Michelle Obama: 'We Don't Make A Big Deal Out Of Valentine's Day'

DARLENE SUPERVILLE   02/13/11 05:30 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — Here's Michelle Obama's advice for couples this Valentine's Day: laugh with your partner.

She says it's what she and President Barack Obama do, and it seems to be working. Their marriage, although tested throughout the years by his political ambitions – for the Illinois Senate, the U.S. Senate and later president – is going on 19 years.

"I think a lot of laughing," the first lady said Tuesday at a White House luncheon with reporters who asked about the Obamas' union. "I think in our house we don't take ourselves too seriously, and laughter is the best form of unity, I think, in a marriage.

"So we still find ways to have fun together, and a lot of it is private and personal. But we keep each other smiling and that's good," she added.

It also helps that Obama is "very romantic."

"He remembers dates, birthdays," Mrs. Obama said last week on "Live! With Regis and Kelly. "He doesn't forget a thing, even when I think he is. . I'll have a little attitude. I give him a little attitude, but he always comes through."

"Got to keep the romance alive, even in the White House," she said.

As for Valentine's Day on Monday, the first lady said her husband would do right by giving her jewelry.

"You can't go wrong," she said.

But Mrs. Obama also said they don't fuss too much over the day that's about celebrating love and affection between couples.

Last year, the Obamas spent Valentine's Day at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland.

In 2009, their first year in the White House, they went home to Chicago and enjoyed a quiet dinner at Table 52, a traditional Southern restaurant owned by Art Smith, the former chef of Obama pal Oprah Winfrey.

How will they celebrate this year? Stay tuned.

"We don't make a big deal out of Valentine's Day because my birthday was the 17th (of January)," she told Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa. She noted, too, that Christmas was just a few weeks before that.

"So by Feb. 14, we're kind of tired," Mrs. Obama said.

For her 47th birthday last month, the Obamas dined at The Source, celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck's restaurant at the Newseum in Washington.

Hearing my sweetie tell me he loves me on Valentines day is all I need. V-day has become extremely commercial and too much about giving/receiving gifts. So we don't make a big deal out of it either as every day is Valentines Day, whether there are good or bad days in our relationship.

Like most holidays, Valentine Days is a commerical rip-off. Everything goes up in cost! But couples can still treat each other in some inexpensive, yet personal way.

My folks started a new tradition almost 50 years ago --Sweet Hearts Day on the 15th of February.
The candy and flowers are half price and you can always get a reservation.

Sweet Hearts Day -- for the romantic but frugal lover!!

Very wise indeed; most of the holidays are commerce-driven shopping or spending days and the prices go much higher on that day. Service disappears, food is fair-to-midland but unless you love Feb. 14th it seems as if you are incapable of loving at all. It's time for a revolution.

A few weeks ago my husband came home from the bookstore with a few items including a wonderful addition annotated edition of Alice in Wonderland for me. He said he saw it and knew I would enjoy it. That means way more to me than a card with someone else's words and a box of chocolates. But don't forget my birthday, that would mean trouble.

If more couples focused on the other 364 days we'd have less breakups and divorces.

First: I show my love and respect for my husband every day. That's the cornerstone of a healthy relationship for me.

Second: I do love Valentine's day. We don't break the bank on it though.

But I must admit that I do enjoy some flowers, candy or a modest piece of jewelry every once in a while......so Valentine's day is a welcome event being that we both keep the 'materialism' in perspective.....

Yes, Just like Hill and Bill...If they didn't have a deep love and respect for each other, they wouldn't have weathered so many bad times. THAT my friend is the sign of a strong relationship.
There are plenty of examples of couples who couldn't make it through the really hard times, so we have to celebrate those who do. The Clinton's did and I think that says something about both of them, and how they feel about each other.
