PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - A man who filmed the speedometer of his car while driving more than 140 miles per hour so he could post it on YouTube, ended up in jail on Saturday and the video confiscated, police said.

Stanislav Vadimovich Bakanov was pulled over by police on Oregon Interstate 5 after he was clocked driving his black 2005 BMW at 118 mph. He filmed Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Postlewait as he approached the car.

When Postlewait asked why he was videotaping, Bakanov said he was filming his speedometer, and his arrest, to post on Youtube. The video later revealed that Bakanov had attained speeds in excess of 140 mph.

He was arrested and confined in Marion County jail Saturday night, charged with reckless driving and speeding. It was his third speeding incident in the past year. The video was confiscated and will be used as evidence against him.

Marion County Police spokesman Don Thompson said winds were gusting at up to 50 mph during the day.

"There were tree branches down on the freeway. To be driving at these speeds today was just plain crazy," he said.

140 is NOT a big deal. I have tens of thousands of miles I've enjoyed driving the autobahn in Germany at speeds well in excess of that for literally hundreds of miles at a time. True, their roads are VERY much better than ours, overall, and their drivers are better, as a whole. But geez, it's just NOT fast.

The BIG problem with going fast in the USA is that so few drivers are cluefull and they don't look.

I got pulled over at a speed similar to this in Nevada last spring and the guy asked what I was doing. I told him that because I had all four: The road, the car, the driver and the weather, I was good to go, the roads well paved and empty, I was sharp and well rested, the car in great shape, new tires, and the weather cool, absolutely clear with no direct sun from VERY high clouds that day. So, I told him, I thought I'd cruze.

He said OK..... No problem.

I saw the remains of a MB S class sedan outside Munich that hit an animal of some sort in the autobahn. It looked like a dozen hand grenades had gone off inside it. Nice driving, idjit....

Easy to believe.

The Mercedes vehicles are fast, yes, but they're terrible at speed. Oh, they're very COMFORTABLE at speed, but comfort does not equal control.

I pilot a Porsche - I can go, and have gone, (on American roads) from 120 to 60 in about 3 seconds, maybe less, and my machine is nowhere near as capable as the new ones. (I don't tent to cruze over 120 very often.) I don't think there's any production Mbz ever made that can do that in less than 5 to 6 seconds, they're just too heavy.

Driving speed is relative to what you are used to, and what surface you have and what potential obstacles are around.

140 to 160 miles per hour, 230 to 250 km/h, is not an exotic, or really even fast speed. Most American performance cars of the 1960s would reach 140 with only a change of valve-springs, to permit another thousand rpm of engine speed. The Ford Thunderbird of 1955 would do 140, the Jaguar XK140, of earlier in the 1950's would do 140; it was where the "140" in the name came from. ditto the XK150.

Getting those cars stopped from those speeds took more skill. You had to plan your stopping. Full application of the brakes would heat and fade them. A "panic-stop" application at 140 would leave you going about 100 with no more brake-braking until the drums cooled down. You used down-shifting and more graded applications, even racing. Racing you could also put the car sideways to "scrub off" speed.

The handling of especially some of the soft-sprung American machinery of those days... At speed you floated. You could just about hit a tire rip-strip without popping a tire at over 120, you had so little weight on the ground.

The handling and stopping of today's cars is so much better. And you have air-bags and seat-belts... And It's a big deal to go 140 today? A jailable offense? My mamma used to do it! Jeez!

Solid reasoning. If 55 mph was the speed limit back in the old days, we should be able to go at least twice that now that we have air bags and whatnot to protect us.

The guy in the "Black Devil" video is not going that much faster than traffic. Cameras have tunnel-vision and the tunnel-vision makes the action look faster and nearer out of control for being going "down a tube".

You can do the kind of riding that is shown on California freeways, or could, if they have changed the rules that allowed bikes to split lanes. The kind of riding the rider is doing is not safe, but is not insane. The rider is going a little faster than could be considered "reasonable" for cutting traffic and splitting lanes, but he is handling the bike and traffic well, reacting to what traffic is doing well ahead of where he is riding.

DUDE, HE IS DOING WHEELIES AT 90 MPH INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC!

What the heck would you consider unsafe driving! lol.

"It much worse when you take in to account the cars instability at those speeds"

BMWs are pretty stable at 140mph, I've been driving these speeds for tens of thousands of kilometers on the Autobahn in BMW's and other cars for 20 years.

The contempt in your words barely masks your jealousy.

Just because you don't have the skill to do 140 doesn't mean others are lying about it.

"So is there really that many places left where you can go that fast, or is the traffic too dense in Germany?"

About 70% of the 13000km long Autobahn system have no speed limit.
Of course the traffic desity varies, populated areas have more traffic as well as during rush hours (in the morning, in the late afternoon) the Autobahns are more crowded.
You can still go fast most of the time, cruising speeds averaging 100mph are normal.

I've only been able to really unwind my 335 in the deserts in Arizona a few years back. That was fun!

First word that comes to mind is dumb. The second is dumb. The third is....well you get it. This is just dumb. All the way around. Doing it, filming it, and posting it. Really unbelievable that this guy put people in danger the way he did.

Let me break this down for the appologists. The speed difference between fast moving traffic....say 80 and the 140 this guy was doing is 60 miles per hours. That means this guy is approaching cars just as though he was doing sixty on the freeway and everyone else was parked. It much worse when you take in to account the cars instability at those speeds and his complete innability to swerve. Now put that one in your head. You are driving sixy miles an hour on a freeway full of parked cars with no way to swerve. Still seem "Cool?"

P.S. If you said yes you probably shouldn't have a license.

Move to Germany then there are certain places on the autobahn where there are no speed limits... just the limit of your car and of course having an open road and the talent to drive at such speeds

sorry...meant to say - agreed!

I really find it hard to agree with police on this. This was a non-violent offense that does not warrant an arrest. Speeding tickets aren't savings millions of lives, they are making millions of dollars for police departments. It's a great fundraiser for the state, lets not forget about that.
You can agree or disagree with my sentiment, but no one can deny that there is a monetary drive for states to give out citations for speeding.
05:38 PM on 02/14/2011
I'm not arguing with your point, however there is a massive difference between 140 MPH and lets say driving 75 in a 65. If he wants to drive that fast he needs to take his car to the track on lapping days and go to town. The street is not a place for this.

So, by your logic, you can discharge an Uzi in public and as long as it doesn't hit anyone, that's ok.

I’m an American living in Germany. Here are the world famous Autobahns, where parts have NO Speed limit. Everyday I go to work, I drive approx 180 Kilometers per hour, or over 100 MPH. On a good day when there is little traffic I have maxed out my Opel Vectra V6 at 235 Kilometers per hour or approx 145 MPH. ( those are my speedometer readings how ever accurate they are). Driving fast is no big deal, IF you have the car for it, and EVERYONE around you is driving the same. I bet if I put all you in a car, over here in Germany, with a Blacked out speedometer, and you just drove “ keeping up with the flow of traffic” 95% of you would be aright around the 100 MPH mark. There is nothing medical about driving at 100 MPH, unless you’re in the states, with a 60 MPH speed limit.

The banking and design of the Autobahn supports those speeds. Our system of roads (for the most part) do not.

I have drive all over Germany and Most of Europe, ( for business ) and I have NEVER seen a banked portion of the autobahn. If you don't know, please don't comment

I agree. I had a new Vectra (Cadillac Catera here in the U.S.) when i was in Germany. We have video of going MAX ( 145MPH ) and with 5 or 6 other cars around all going the same. It seemed like 75. Then we got passed by a big Mercedes that was going around 200... WHOOOSH !!!!
THAT was awesome. The cars are BALANCED and quiet at 125 MPH.
Interesting.

I think this is awesome. Same with the kid using Facebook for a hitman.

The penalty for this should be surgical and result in being absent from the gene pool in the future. This kind of stupid is contagious; there is no reason to test it being hereditary.
