WATCH: Who Is Esperanza Spalding And Why She Won The Grammy

When the nominees for the Best New Artist Grammy Award were read off on Sunday night, everyone (whether they were watching or not) assumed that Justin Bieber was headed up on stage to accept it.

The other nominees included Mumford & Sons who had just performed alongside Bob Dylan, Florence And The Machine, and Drake. Oh.. and Esperanza Spalding, who ended up taking home the Grammy.

The question on everyone's lips come Monday was - wait, who? Spalding, who has performed at the White House and is no stranger to prestigious stages and duets, hails from Portland. Jazz lovers know her name well, having been listening to her for years now, and must be scratching their heads as to how she could have won "Best New Artist" since her albums from 2006 and 2008 both performed incredibly well on jazz charts.

Spalding's talents are manifold - she sings, plays a mean jazz bass, and composes songs - and her ambition knows no bounds. Not only has she just won a Grammy, but she also was the youngest person to ever become a professor at the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Since its obviously high time we all knew more about her, here she is performing in Copenhagen... All you need to do is Google her name to find many videos where this came from.
