Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Released: See The Specs

Samsung Galaxy Tab 101

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/14/11 08:25 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

While the world waits for Apple's next-generation iPad, Samsung just unveiled an update to its own tablet line.

Samsung revealed the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (informally known as the "Galaxy Tab 2") alongside the Galaxy S II smartphone at a special press conference at this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

In addition to a roomy 10.1-inch display, the Galaxy Tab update is powered by Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and features a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, front- and rear-facing webcams, and a choice between 16GB and 32 GB of storage, according to Engadget's hands-on preview of the tablet.

Engadget notes that many of the new Galaxy Tab's specs resemble features found on the upcoming Motorola Xoom. However, Engadget says that the "lightweight design" of Samsung's new tablet is in a class by itself.

Samsung's slim and light Galaxy S II runs Android 2.3 (Ginerbread) and features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, a dual-core processor, two webcams, and an option for built-in Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

According to ReadWriteWeb, Samsung didn't reveal an official price or release date for either device. However, Engadget managed to grab some video time with the new tablet. Watch the hands-on video (below), and visit Engadget for an in-depth look at the Galaxy Tab 10.1's features.

I know the Tegra 2 is an awesome processor with great graphics processing capability (link references the Motorola Atrix, which also has a Tegra 2 so it's a half-tangent), but how much RAM does the Tab have?  RAM is going to be crucial.  As long as it has more than the iPad (256MB, which is very skimpy) then they'll be in reasonably good shape... try 1GB, though.

hope cheaper than Xoom.. .it's too bad their getting rid of the 7 inch form factor. For me it's just the right size in between a smartphone and a notebook.support MPEG4 video.haha, recently I found a Free MPEG Video Converter(http://www.aneesoft.com/win-free-mpeg-video-converter.html ).Just come in handy!

I recall reading the Xoom has 1GB of RAM.  It costs more, but it's smart thinking in terms of multitasking or applications that need RAM.  On a tablet, shoving in as little RAM as on a cell phone (256MB) is an insult.  512MB should be a minimum standard.

A mount to mimic in-dash navigation for any vehicle lacking same would be neat. Sorta Buck Rogers.

Probably the slickest competitor to the iPad. Looks very nice. And coming from Samsung, quality is not a problem.

I couldn't wait and wasn't investing a lot of cash in 1st generation products.  Picked up a Viewsonic G Tab after playing with a friend's.  Boy this thing is fun.  The software was crappy out the box which was not a problem, software is non permanent, but the hardware is what really matters and it is really good nvidia tegra.  Rooted it, flashed a new ROM a couple of times--I like to tinker and try new things.  Loaded a ton of apps and it is sweet. Seven labeled homescreens i.e. Web Quick launch for bookmarks, Productivity, Communications, Utilities & Tweaks, Entertainment, News & Resources and Executive Assistant with all my mail, business facebook & twitter, tasks and feeds coming in on my executive assistant screen, it is all loaded on a rotating cube. It's swipe and rotate. In a 3D style carousal.

When I get tired of flashing custom ROMs on this, the next generation or two of tabs will be out and much cheaper and I will pick one of them up. For anyone who likes tech toys, this one is worth it. Oh, and it multi tasks with full YouTube and has flash 10.1 however my browser is html 5--other specs USb, SD, bluetooth, GPS, capacitive touch screen, HDMI...did I mention I'm having too much fun?

OK, I'm curious about the ROMs you're flashing.  I can tell you that I don't understand that and would appreciate a bit of enlightenment. One other question - what was the starting flavor of Android?  After you rooted it, what were you using.

I'm trying to keep up but it does get harder every few hours.

Android 2.2 Froyo wasn't meant for a tablet however when Viewsonic put the tab out they wanted to go Android.  There are some good pieces to some of the included software I did like.  The browser lets you save bookmarks in a folder and at the same time your desktop. Really works for me because of quick launching of my daily sites which are many.

I'm flashing TNT Lite 4.2  Started with TNT Lite 2.2, then proceeded to 2.4. It's pretty easy once you root  (Androot, Z4root or Rootme) a zip file you download from any Android app site --for smoother UI.  Then load Clockworkmod which in case something goes wrong you can reboot from a backup in case you can not boot to the desktop.  After that you use Clockworkmod which also a utility to load your custom ROMS from.  You can use an external SD or it will work from the internal.  Also get a copy of Titanium back up and Boot Manager.  They will help you troubleshoot from the desktop environment.

When you try a different ROM you are also performing a data wipe. So each time you will be starting with a clean desktop.  Your user files just back up to SD and reload once you get the interface you prefer. Hope I helped. Android is open source so they encourage tweaks and new discoveries.  A good forum is XDA developers for whatever Android device you want to customize. Start with that in a search engine to go directly to your forum of interest. Some put up YouTube videos showcasing the usage or installing of different ROMs so you can see it in action.  Nothing to be afraid of, you can always do a restore. Unless you do something really bizarre.

Buzzkill, but a necessary one. I won't be getting one. My personal austerity drive negates all but life critical purchases of imported goods.

Two models in less than 12 months? And people sometimes pome fun at Apple for it's aggressive release schedule ...

The difference is that Apple releases iterations of the same product. This is a 10 inch tablet as opposed to the 7 inch Tab. It would be like Apple bringoing a 13" macbook and a 15" six months later. That's not an aggressive schedule because it is not the same product.

Its all about the apps. I have over 130 apps on my iPad, over 80 apps on my iPhone, but on my android phone I have only downloaded less than 10 apps. As much as i hate itune and apple products limits It's difficult to get people like to switch to another platform once we have purchased and get used to software on one platform.

That said, I will be looking forward to is device and zoom. Hopefully android market will develop to be like the apple store with tons of great apps.

Take advantage of all the flash apps and games on the internet.
Especially with the dual-core processor.

And if you want games here go you:

I have tried some flash games with the android phone (mytough4g) and most of them were too slow to play. With a faster CPU though I think they should work.

As for gameloft, I have bought tons of games from them for the iPad during their 99 cent sale last Xmas and last week, along with stuff from Chillingo, and EA. It's too bad these games are not written to be ported between different mobile OS'. Having already a library of games and apps is the major reason I am reluctant to go for other tablets in the future.

I don't want a tablet with 2 cameras and an OLED screen. I just want something that costs $300 or less and can surf the web.

I think the kindles can surf the web in B&W, as well as the nook color.
You should check them out for yourself, but if that is all you want to do those may do it for you.

The nook color has also been rooted and the XDA wizards are steadily adapting it to run honeycomb.

Not nearly the same thing. But thanks.
