Lieberman: Senate Democrats Eying Three-Month Patriot Act Extension [UPDATE: Extension Passes Senate]

First Posted: 02/15/11 03:52 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.), chair of the Senate's Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said on Tuesday that Senate Democrats were likely to agree to an extension of controversial provisions in the Patriot Act, but only for a matter of months.

The Connecticut Independent, relaying talks that had occurred moments earlier in a caucus meeting among Democrats, said that discussion had centered around keeping the law in place "until May." [UPDATE: On Tuesday evening, the Senate approved a three-month extension of the bill by an 86-12 vote.]

"Then there will be a full-fledged debate on it," Lieberman told the Huffington Post. "That was what is discussed and that is okay with me. I support the Patriot Act as is. I think these three provisions are very sensible. There is no record that they have compromised everybody's rights but there is a record that they have helped protect our homeland security."

A three-month extension of the law, which grants wide powers to the federal government to survey potential terrorist threats, would reflect a scaling back of ambition on the part of the legislation's boosters, but fall short of pleasing those who view the law as a violation of civil liberties.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) had been pushing a bill to extend provisions to 2013 with additional congressional oversight, while Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) was pushing for a three-year extension of the provisions without any modification. Senate Republicans, meanwhile, had called for the law to be made permanent. On Monday, after beating back objections from their Tea Party faction, House Republicans passed a nine-month extension of their own, allowing for the government to continue using roving wiretaps, national security letters, and the "lone wolf" provision that allows for suspected targets to be monitored even if they have no known affiliation with a recognized terrorist group.

Asked if the Senate, by pushing debate off for three months, was merely kicking the can down the road, Lieberman noted that can-kicking was "the metaphor for the week." Still, even the temporary solution pleased the senator.

"There are some ongoing investigations that really require some of the authorities that are in the Patriot Act, and if the Act expires on February 28, that would seriously compromise critical national security and homeland security investigations," he said. "So it's not the best result, but it is not a bad result to extend it a couple of months and then have time to debate it."

UPDATE: A senior Democratic aide said that both party leaderships are on board a temporary extension.

"We hot-lined a Reid-McConnell substitute amendment with a three-month extension (until May 27, 2011)," the aide emails. "If we pass this by Unanimous Consent then we may spend a week on the floor later this year debating/voting without jamming it up to election next year."

Smell the freedom. Patriot Act vs. Hitler's Enabling Act

"
For Adolf Hitler, the goal of a legally established dictatorship was now within reach. On March 15, 1933, a cabinet meeting was held during which Hitler and Göring discussed how to obstruct what was left of the democratic process to get an Enabling Act passed by the Reichstag. This law would hand over the constitutional  Read More...

The U.S. government colluded in the murder of over 3000 of its own citizens and is now using the Patriot Act to protect itself from the repercussions.

Proof?
Just watch the collapse of WTC Tower II. The top 20 or so floors of the building tilted at a 25 degree angle but did not fall to the side. This would ordinarily be physically impossible, but these floors above the plane strike instantly disintegrated in mid-air as soon as they began to tilt. Why?

What proves government involvement is the one and a half hours that elapsed between when the WTC attack and the Pentagon attack. Do they expect us to believe that the most powerful military in the world is unable to defend its own headquarters, given an hour and a half warning??

Enjoy what's left of your freedom Americans, its going fast!

The last two elections have made it obvious once again that there is no difference between "electing" a Republican or a Democrat, you get the same poison either way. They both serve the same masters (not the American public). Democracy is great, but it has the great weakness of being the easiest political system for the rich and connected to manipulate to their own ends.

I therefore support BOYCOTTING the next presidential election. If everyone were to do this, or even a lot of us, it would send a powerful message to those who would betray the American people that we are not deceived.

How do you think Richard Nixon would have used this power? NO BIG BROTHER - Doesn't matter what side you're on; Religious freaks, you can and will be listened to. NRA gun owners - you will most certainly be listened to - and as much as I despise your insane views - I'M AGAINST BIG BROTHER and the Patriot Act. Both sides had better stand up to this. This encroachment is just the beginning. Unless they have a dog and pony show like the BS leading up to the illegal Iraq invasion to convince us otherwise - it is time to MAN UP. (No crying Beck and Boehner). This is just wrong.

The scariest part of this article is woefully understated. For those who may have missed it, the Republicans want to permanently extend the Patriot Act into perpetuity.

That being said, it is also a tragedy that a Democratically controlled Senate would vote 86-12 in favor of a law which violates our civil liberties while not making us the least bit safer.

It would be interesting to see how many Senators and Representatives are invested in Industries profiting from the "Homeland Security" laws. Likewise how many and how deeply they are invested in "Defense Industries". Is it to their financial advantage to support repressive laws like this?

If the Patriot Act wasn't such an ongoing travesty we could focus on the immeasurable shortcomings of Howdy Doody who clearly represents something other than US interests as embodied in our Constitution and our sovereignty.

In the midst of this horrendous decision to extend the Patriot Act and its intrusion into our lives and curtailment of our freedoms, here is a little laugh for you:

One poster on a site described DHS as "Department of Homeland Stupidity"!

Of all descriptions, this seems to be the most apt.

Let's see here. Democrats agree to pass an extension of the Patriot Act, and knowing that won't sit well with the troops, HP decides to put Lieberaman's face on it.

Typical.....

Most tips about a terrorist attack come from outside our nation this is another Washington glut of wasteful spending ,dreamed up from the Bush administration that could be eliminated!
09:12 AM on 02/16/2011
it isn't about wasteful spending and making money, it's about reworking some of the most protective laws citizens have in this country. It's a travesty that it's gone on this long. And how come no one is calling out Obama for not getting rid of the Patriot Act, which was one of his campaign promises.

Fanned i can't argue about what you post but while the Government wants to cut programs that affect the middle class and poor they have to move on other cuts for the people and it is a waste of tax payers dollars!
