Carmelo Anthony Trade Nixed By The New York Knicks

The long-talked-about trade negotiations between the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets nearly came to fruition on Monday before Knicks management that the Nuggets were asking for too much in exchange for Carmelo Anthony.

The New York Daily News reported on Tuesday that Knicks GM Donnie Walsh and head coach Mike D'Antoni nixed a deal that would have sent Anthony to the Knicks in exchange for Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, a first round draft pick, Eddy Curry's expiring contract, and one more starter whose identity was not confirmed.

The Daily News also reported that Knicks owner James Dolan may overrule his staff in this case and execute the trade.

The Nuggets have been talking with teams around the league about a potential Anthony trade since the star forward declined to sign a 3-year, $65 million contract extension last summer. The Knicks became the clear front-runner in January after the New Jersey Nets backed out of negotiations.

Anthony, a Brooklyn native, has said he'd like to play in New York, and the Knicks have also expressed interest in acquiring the 26-year-old.

The teams will have until the February 24 trade deadline to make a deal. New York is facing heightened media pressure to get Anthony at all costs. Influential columnist Stephen A. Smith said on Tuesday that New Yorkers out to be "calling for peoples' heads" if the team fails to acquire Anthony before the deadline.
