California Cat Burglar Actually A Cat Named Dusty (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/16/11 01:10 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

San Mateo, California is being terrorized by the most nefarious and elusive criminal it has ever faced. We speak, of course, of the notorious cat burglar, Dusty...who is actually a cat who actually sneaks into his neighbor's homes at night, undetected, and steals things.

Clearly, San Mateo isn't particularly tough on crime, or else they would have done something about this fuzzy menace. But the residents seem to take the thievery in stride, stopping by Dusty's house whenever something goes missing.

Sure, it seems benign, but what if other neighborhood cats get the idea, and start "copying" Dusty's modus operandi? You would have to call those cats something clever, something like "cat mimics," or "cat copiers" or "cats committing crimes similar to another cat's in the hopes that no one will suspect them." We'll think of something.

Until then, lock your doors and close your windows, San Mateo residents. You may ignore crime, but crime will not ignore you...or your favorite pair of Converse All Stars.

I have a the same breed of cat (snowshoe) who was also a klepto. Back in he's days of crime he stole gloves, toys, a package of socks, even a police dog's hat and somehow a page from adult magazine. He eventually stopped stealing when he got older.

I live near the beach in Milford, Ct, and I thought my cat, Olivia was the only cat who did this! I was shocked to know there was another out there. She is a tiny black and white cat who is about three years old. About two years ago she started bringing home gloves by the 100's, as well as shirts, sandels, shoes, kids, and adults, rags, facecloths, goggles, sunglasses, stuffed animals, and one day a huge black bra. One day a family with little kids showed up, and I was able to give them a huge garbage bag of lots of their kids belongings including many shoes, socks, and ear muffs. I would love to talk to Dusty's owners about this. Anne

This is so funny! Our cat, Elmo, steals everything he can get his paws on. If we can't find ponytail holders, barretts, magnets on the fridge, kids artwork, pens, pencils, markers, or whatever he is in the mood to steal (yesterday it was our fortune cookies) we just look under the rug or under the tables and see where he is hiding our stuff.

Now that I think about it, maybe he needs to go out more and visit the neighbors!!!

It's all fun and games until 'Dusty" brings home a baby's arm and the neighbors come looking for it.

Dogs take note ... heres a cat that gives the phrase "mans best friend" some merit.
Stealthly and cunning is excatly whats needed in the new world era.

With just a little behavior modification training, this cat could be bringing in some serious cash.  Or perhaps if Dusty's family moved to Rodeo Drive.

That is so cool. Great neighbors. Cat owner needs to have a party and invite the entire neighborhood.

Then Dusty will clean them ALL out.
