Christiane Amanpour On 'Colbert': Talks Egypt, Cats (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/16/11 12:07 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

Christiane Amanpour was on Tuesday's "Colbert Report" to talk to Stephen Colbert about the Egyptian revolution. She told him that the revolution was a good thing, despite any fears he might have about what will happen next in Egypt.

"People have been asking especially since 9/11, when is this part of the world going to have democracy?" she said. "And the minute they do it everyone goes no, no, no!"

Amanpour also said it was "interesting" that the U.S. was "calling for democracy democracy democracy, and then maybe doesn't like the outcome."

But the highlight of Amanpour's visit was undoubtedly the adorable miniature safari suit she brought for Colbert's psychic cat--and her namesake--"Christiane Aman-purr."

Poverty and hunger are the parents of the Egyptian, North African violence.

The parents of their poverty and hunger are a bad form of government. They need to move to a republic (not a democracy) like our founders did.

It is a mistake to think Mubarak was a dictator, he took orders from the Western Powers. Globalization, operated through the offices of the Inter Alpha Group of banks, its' appendage the Wall St. cabal, turned the Egyptian breadbasket economy into a net importer of food. North Africa, the Middle East, South America, Mexico are all erupting in violence because of hunger and poverty demanded by market forces. It is happening in the US. It is a national security crisis.

You forget jealousy. "I want what my neighbor has": a new shiny car before the "for Eclo sure" and "Repo-man" arrives. The car, the Eclo and the Repo all are gimmicks of course.

It is an uprising in which the "bourgeoisie" doesn't want to pay for the castle-walls of the king/emporer anymore, but takes the power away from him. Cities thriving, gaining importance to a one-person-powered iron-fisted reign. Traditional revolution style.

The average Egyptian lives on $2.00 a day, and may go hungry, with no job, no future, I don't know where you are coming from, who are you lecturing to?

Ms. Amanpour said we sometimes do not like the results of democracy abroad. Well, we often do not like those results here either. Our country's founders knew how disastrous democracy is and mandated a republic in Article 4, Section 4. Individuals have the right to vote in democracies and no others. Once the best organized mob in a de-mob-ocracy has spoken, EVERYONE has to march in lockstep with it. For example, the Texas textbook debacle. Stop calling our republic a democracy. Protect and defend our Constitution so it can protect you.

If Amanpour and Jim Cantore of the Weather Channel ever went on vacation together to a foreign country, its embassies and airports would be filled with panicky tourists trying to flee the imminent revolution or hurricane. They'd have the whole country to themselves!

I love this woman. I used to worry about her so much during the Yugoslavian tragedy. I was hoping she would settle down after she got married. But I was crazy. We need people like her more than ever.

In order for us to win the war (in WWII), we forged alliances with ideologues that we would usually not ever talk to. After the war there was the Cold War where we continued our battle with our enemy. This is what the Persians and Arabs (Sunni and Shiites) will do to defeat "The West" (also known as the Great Satan). then they will settle up the differences. but that is only after "The West" has been destroyed.

Open your mind to the possibility of the youth vote in Egypt, which is 34%. They want to control their destiny, and they're not thinking about religion.

When there are domestic problems at home, "leaders" love to gin up phony threats from abroad, it kind of takes the heat off. I have no fear that little groups of "gangsters" like al Qaida or the Muslim Brotherhood are going to "take over the west". There are drug cartels in Colombia that are better armed and funded than they are.

Somebody got the better of S. Colbert's sophormic arguments, at last! I really think that he agreed with her.
Egypt is the THRESHOLD. We are entering new territory "Where No Man Has Gone Before".
When you consider the Concept, "Freedom of Speech" had no forebears before being the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment. And NOW the concept is sweeping the Arab/Islamic World. (Yes, I understand the Sunni-Shiite schism is a driving force, also). Wages, class warfare, prestige and privledge are a part of the dichotomy of Division. Unfortunately, we in the USA also experience these Divisions.

Not true. Before the Constitution was Magna Carta (1215), the foundational document for our Constitution.

and, since I learned that in school, here, have a wikilink: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magna_Carta educate yourself

Do you not know that Stephen is channeling Bill O'Reilly when he makes what you call "sophormic" (sophomoric?) arguments?

"Divisions"? Glenn Beck code-speak?

This was a fun segment. Don't usually watch SC but I am a Christiane groupie and enjoy seeing her. She is good whether in the crowds in Cairo or on the Report. Have been following her since Yugoslavia.
