Some of the comments on Slate are critical of the books' literary merit to the point that they question the reading public's taste. Having read the English translations, I'd agree that there are notable flaws, almost as though they hadn't gotten past preliminary editing in some respects. But I think readers immediately recognize Lisbeth Salander's horrendous pain and outrage and, at the same time, the almost banal reality and multiple layers of the misogyny that Larsson depicts in these books, possibly intentionally doing so at times in the equally banal prose of a news reporter. So IMHO it's the story - as much as or more than its telling - that resonates with readers and propels us forward from chapter to chapter. I wish Eva good luck and can't wait to read the fourth installment!
