Wisconsin Budget Protests Intensify (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/17/11 12:07 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

Thousands of protesters gathered in Madison in reaction to Gov. Scott Walker's (R) controversial new budget proposal.

HuffPost's Amanda Terkel reports:

Wisconsin is facing a $137 million budget deficit. In order to close it, Walker wants to sharply curtail the collective bargaining rights of public employee unions, effectively preventing them from negotiating benefits, hours and working conditions. (They would, however, still be able to bargain over base wages, and Walker decided to exempt firefighters and police workers from his measure.) Public workers would also have to contribute more money toward pension and health insurance plans.

HuffPost Eyes and Ears contributors, Matt Robison and Julia Meuse, took photos of the protests in Madison. Do you have any images of your own? Submit them below!

I wonder if they've tried a test case in the Courts,  concerning the limitations on Collective Bargaining, if it's constitutional?

I am wondering, with that many people protesting in Wisconsin if they would not have enough voters to sign a petition for a State Recall Election of the Governor and other Elected Officials. Wisconsin is one in 18 States that have that right. Through this legal procedure 2 Governors of other States have been Impeached; ......."1921 North Dakota Governor Impeached"......& ...... "2003 California Governor Impeached" by Recall. I am not sure but I believe in the laws of Wisconsin requires that there be a 25% voter signature requirement.

We do have that law, unfortunately the state constitution determines he must serve at least 1 year before you can begin the recall procedure.

This is the Biggest News in the USA. It deserves to be the headline story. I don't understand why it is buried.

It is because the billionaires own the news. In Atlanta, where, I live it was covered on Page four at the bottom today. The billionaire corporatists don't want to remind us that there are way more of us serfs than there are billionaires, so they censor and slant the news to their liking. Watch Al Jazeera and BBC. It's very interesting.

Taking away collective bargaining rights harms us all.

Say no to racing China to the bottom to see who can pay less, work more and pollute the most.

70 protesters (mostly teachers) made it into the State Senate chamber for their vote on the proposal, 4 were arrested. No Democratic senators showed up, they left the state. What a great strategy! It's a revival of democracy worldwide...

It isn't just Madison. A protest is growing at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee too. This is a statewide protest.

Its huge. All over the state. Local authorities are not backing this horrible bill. Where is the main stream media? over 30,000 for FOUR days in Madison. And many more across the state. This should be the top story of every national network.

Enough of the middle East, we are fighting for our OWN freedom here at home.
