DNC Expands Role In Labor Protests To Ohio, Indiana

First Posted: 02/17/11 05:16 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Building on the momentum in Wisconsin, where tens of thousands of protesters have turned out to oppose Republican Gov. Scott Walker's effort to strip collective-bargaining rights from the state's public-employee unions, President Barack Obama's campaign organization is mobilizing its followers in Ohio and Indiana, where similar measures are being considered.

Thousands descended upon the Ohio statehouse Thursday to protest a bill that would eliminate collective-bargaining rights for state employees and curtail the rights of local-level government employees. The debate is similar to that in Wisconsin: Supporters say it's necessary to deal with budget problems, while opponents say it's nothing but a vicious assault on unions.

Now folded into the Democratic National Committee, Obama's campaign group Organizing For America is already actively engaged in Wisconsin and is beginning to ramp up organizing efforts in Ohio, though observers say the latter process is about a week behind that in Wisconsin. The group is also beginning to dig into Indiana, whose legislature is considering a bill to limit collective bargaining by teachers.

A DNC staffer told The Huffington Post that the group upped its efforts in Wisconsin after Chairman Tim Kaine spoke with local legislators last week. OFA then began organizing turnout for Thursday's statehouse rally and running phone banks in Ohio targeting state senators, which are slated to continue next week. This weekend, organizers have set up door-to-door canvassing in key districts that they hope will likewise put pressure on swing lawmakers.

OFA National Deputy Director Jeremy Bird said volunteers first alerted the group to the contested Ohio legislation. "The energy is pretty remarkable," he told The Huffington Post. "People started to contact us, and they'd call our office and our volunteers, and say, 'This is a big deal. This is going to affect my family.' ... That started to really simmer earlier this week in Ohio, and it's starting to pick up the pace."

In Ohio, major labor unions including AFSCME and the AFL-CIO are also stepping up the pressure against Gov. John Kasich (R) and the bill's supporters. The AFL-CIO estimated that tens of thousands of phone calls, emails and handwritten postcards have been delivered to state senators in opposition to the legislation, and a spokesman said the protests will continue in the coming weeks.

"One of the things we're trying to do is reach out more to the general public, especially through media, but also through a lot of this phone-calling and door-to-door efforts," Andy Richards, the field communications director for the AFL-CIO in Ohio, said in an interview with The Huffington Post, noting that the protests have helped re-energize a base frustrated by the November elections. "But I think having them as an ally with that, and being able to reach people we aren't necessarily reaching with our membership, is good."

OFA is also stepping up its online mobilization via Facebook and Twitter, as well as the work of its youth chapters at Ohio State University and other schools.

Indiana isn't yet seeing a similar level of progressive momentum, but OFA blasted out an email Thursday to its members regarding the pertinent legislation.

In an interview with Wisconsin's local WTMJ-TV, Obama condemned Gov. Walker's proposal. "Some of what I've heard coming out of Wisconsin, where you're just making it harder for public employees to collectively bargain, generally seems like more of an assault on unions," Obama said. "And I think it's very important for us to understand that public employees, they're our neighbors, they're our friends."

I'm in Ohio and I just heard on NPR that there might be consideration of a ballot initiative to settle this. This would be a HUGE MISTAKE! There are less that ten percent of the population that are union members and the rest are envious. If you put it on the ballot it will fail!

The obvious strategies are to look at legal challenges and see if this violates the Nation Labor Relations act of 1935, and of course, STRIKE!!! This may be their last hurrah, so they may as well have a good old fashioned labor strike. Ultimately this is the only real power they have.

First the trash collectors should walk out, followed soon after by the teachers, and then slow downs by police and fire responding to emergencies only, and continue to a showdown with the National Guard.

F&F...excellent post.

Ballot initiatives are great way to ensure we give everyone a say in issues that have absolutely no impact on their own lives, like letting straight people weigh in on LGBT marriages. WT*F does it have to do with them, and why should they get a say? It's tyranny of the majority.

The last time the Ohio Gov't passed a bill limiting collective bargaining, it was placed on the ballot for referendum. It failed 2 to 1 and the Republican Governor was tossed out in the next election. History is on the side of progress.

History books taught us 50 years ago that the Pharoahs turned Egypt into a mighty empire. Feudal overlords and the Holy Roman Emperor turned medieval Europe into the most powerful land on earth for 600 years. J. Pierpont Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, John Astor, and Cornelius Vanderbilt turned the USA into the latest world superpower. Wrong on all counts. Slaves built Egypt. Medieval serfs constructed the cathedrals and tended the fields that turned medieval Europe into a world power. Factory workers and the civil service built America, both before and after unions came into existence. History has taught us these lessons, let's not forget them.

There are those who want to turn history on its head and say America would be nothing without its entrepreneurs. That's true. But any union worker who has a head on his shoulders and a good work ethic can replace the boss and run a profitable business venture. It takes a rare entrepreneur to leave his glass castle and not make a mockery of himself on the shop floor.

It's amazing to me how many people write comments like "unions have outlived their usefulness" or "we all have to make sacrifices in these tough times...cutbacks are the only way". Some of them are ex-union members. How about giving some concrete examples of the sacrifices you're making, or how your union worked against you?

Here's mine: I returned to university to get an MA after working 5 years of retail/tourism jobs with an airline and a store in a shopping center. I am not having children until I can pay off my loans, support myself with a rewarding career, and give them a decent life without feeling forced to accept 'any old job' just to put bread and milk on the table. Put yourself in that position, you're *asking* to be a bitter, unhealthy, unfulfilled human being by the time you're 55, and you'll be on Huffington Post supporting union busting and tax breaks to the filthy rich, because what else could you do?

SHAMEFUL:

Some Wall Street types (and others) make over a billion dollars a year – each year. How much is a billion dollars? How can you visualize an amount of money so high? Here is one way to think about it: The median household income in the US is around $29,000, meaning half of us make less and half make more. If you make $29,000 a year, and don’t spend a single penny of it, it will take you 34,482 years to save a billion dollars. . . . (Please come back and read the rest of this after you have recovered.)

The DNC should have been on this when it started. Unions are our base, and they deserve our support. What Walker is doing to these workers is terrible.
08:17 PM on 02/20/2011
Union workers should shut down the State of Wisconsin. No Trains, No Trucks, No Firefighters, No Police Protection. No School teachers.
Be Strong. Now is your time to shine. Show America who really built this Country.
Walker will go down.

Agreed. Essential services like police, emergency health responders, fire fighters, deserve workers protections and union representation like all other workers, but if they walkout it has to be in rotation so that people don't die as a result of understaffing.

Garbage collectors, snowplow drivers, transit operators...on the other hand. I saw shut 'em all down. Especially when they're getting 17 inches of snow. Nothing gets the attention of a governor more than 'loss of a business day'.

The answer is full employment as long as workers are begging the economic royalists will control us. If everyone is working there will be a labor shortage causing wages and benefits to increase. How do we do this? share our jobs. subsidize food shelter clothing education and health care. What are we working for anyway? Our climate is more important to our survival than the latest gadget.

The real aggressions associated with unions and public sector employees(employment) is against the American public. Why should the participants in the unions be exempted from contributing to their own retirement plans? All the retirement plans I have ever participated in while employed in private sector required my active participation by allocating a percentage of my wages to that plan. That same active participation was required for any of the family health care plans. Why are federal and sate employees so special that they deserve a free ride?

Under what authority are the POTUS and his administration participating ON THE SIDE of the UNIONS? Is the also part of the commerce clause? Is it a function of the EPA, the FCC, just what? It is nothing more than blatant tyranny against the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Working to take benefits and rights away from yourself. You should be asking yourself why you work for chump change and support letting the economic royalists off the hook. There always have been scabs and you sound like one to me.

Yeah the momentum is starting to build in Ohio. People are really ticked off, and its motivated the base the most since 2008. I've started an online petition, directly targeted at Governor Kasich and Ohio State Senators, and I have received over 2500 signatures in just four days. IF your from Ohio and interested in signing my petition, go to change.org and type in "Stop the Anti-Collective Bargaining Job Killing Bill in Ohio" and sign it! Then share it with friends and family members. Anyone can sign it, it will still go to Gov. Kasich if your not from Ohio.
