The Drunkest Countries In the World (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 02/17/11 05:39 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

The United States of America doesn't even come close to making the list of the drunkest countries in the world. The USA ranks 57th on the list, according to statistics gathered by the World Health Organization.

The "Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2011," which was released by the WHO on February 11, lists alcohol consumption statistics for every country on the planet, not only examining how much is consumed, but breaking down what types of alcohol different countries consume.

Check out the WHO report to find out more about individual nations.

The drunkest nation in the world might not be the one you expect, but it's ahead by almost 3 liters. Many of the top 25 are European nations, showing that the drunkest nations aren't necessarily the most impoverished. Spain, Russia, the UK, and Finland all made the Top 25.

The graphic below gives some perspective on where the greatest amounts of alcohol per capita, and the top 25 drunkest nations (ranked in order of most litres of pure alcohol consumed per capita) can be seen in the following slideshow.

25. Bulgaria - 12.4 litres per capita

Why is Canada not on that list? It's like a religion.

How about a survey on the rudest tourists in the world. You would be on the top of this list.

No fair! Those darn Europeans get a head start. If our kids could drink as soon as they can climb onto a barstool we'd have a fighting chance.

"The Drunkest Countries In the World"

What a disgustingly false headline. To help enlighten the editors of this website: It's possible to imbibe alcohol (even a lot of it during a year) and not be drunk.

Now, if they made this study as a relation between alcohol and rudeness, based on my experience as a local in a tourist destination....the top rankings would go like:

1) British.
2) Irish.
3) Russians.
4) Lithuanians

and the bottom one would be

26) Norwegians
25) Swedish
24) Finns
23) Germans

Walk into a club full of drunken Brits, you know somebody is going home bloody and something will definitely be broken.

Having tasted American beers, makes sense the US would rank so low.

Cow piss does not count as alcohol.

(Oh no he did-int) LOL.

There is plenty of great American beer, however, most of our best breweries are not (yet) large enough to distribute outside the country. America has truly been experiencing a beer renaissance for the last several years.

100 correct, 0% wrong as long as you mean major brands. Micro-breweries everywhere usually make a superior product.

Muslims aren't supposed to drink... and Obama has no DWI convictions. I smell a conspiracy...

Andorra? There's a European country named Andorra? I'm not exactly ignorant on such things but I would be entirely unable to find it on a map.I could locate Muldova and Lativa no problem but not Andorra.

Everyone knows where it is. But then again, you are probably American so that would not surprise anybody. Or the fact the ONE SINGLE GOOGLE SEARCH would have shown it to you....

Between Spain and France.

That actually came across as very rude. That was not my intention, unfortunately you cannot edit the posts at HuffPost. My apologies if it did. It suppose to be a joke, but came out wrong.

I suppose it's one of those countries that if one blinks it is missed. I've been to the region and didn't know it was there.

This is just another example of how Obama is making us fall behind the rest of the world. We should be number one.

Since the GOP control congress I know I have a bigger urge to drink....

Our last administration had THREE drunk-driving arrests between just the President and VP. How's a current administration doing? Zero drunk driving arrests. This country cannot compete in this arena any longer.

Are those per capita numbers weekly or yearly?
12:45 PM on 02/22/2011
....just another example of how America continues to fall behind in the world. 4 more years of Obama should help us move up a few rungs on this latter.

To long have Americans been the laughing stock of the drinking community. So what if we do not need to drink to stay warm.. so what if we have water clean enough to drink.. so what if most Americans do not need to drink away their sorrows. We need to start drinking patriotically! Be proud of being an American and drink a cold one!

That's it. I'm moving to Moldova.

I will do my part for America today and help pick up the slack. We need to quadruple our intake to catch up with the rest of the world!
