Helen Thomas On Israel Comments: 'I Should Have Kept My Mouth Shut'

Helen Thomas defended the controversial comments about Israel which led her to resign as a White House columnist during an appearance on "Joy Behar" on Wednesday. But Thomas acknowledged that she probably should have "kept my mouth shut" instead of making the comments. (She is now a columnist for a Virginia paper.)

Behar played the tape of her saying that Israelis should "get the hell out of Palestine" because it was occupying the territory, and that Jews in Israel could return to Germany, Poland or the United States. Thomas said she did not realize the statement would "ring that many bells" because, since World War II, Jews have been free to go wherever they wanted.

"Everything is distorted, but I don't care," she said of the fracas surrounding her comments.

"You don't care at this point?" Behar said.

"No. Hell no," Thomas said. She said her ostracism was influenced by "organized lobbyists in favor of Israel...I can call the president of the United States anything in the book, but if you say one thing about Israel, and you're off limits."

However, Thomas did say that "I should have kept my mouth shut, probably."
