Wisconsin Teachers Union Protests Gov. Scott Walker's Bill; Idaho, Florida Follow

UPDATE:
It's back to school for Madison schools today for the first time in a week. Teachers are planning on discussing the protests in an objective way with students and possibly incorporating Wisconsin labor history into their lessons, reports the Wisconsin State Journal.

The protests there have had a ripple effect across the country.

Idaho teachers unions held rallies in Boise and 10 other cities in the state on Monday to protest proposed layoffs for hundreds of teachers and limitations on their collective bargaining, according to Reuters.

And in Florida, with teachers at the helm, union workers are posting plans on the "Awake the State" Facebook and Twitter pages for protests on March 8, the Sunshine State News reports. Protesters will speak out against a proposed $5 billion in budget cuts.

----------------------

The Wisconsin State Capitol bulged with thousands of union members, including teachers, Thursday protesting Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's bill that would limit union bargaining rights.

Walker says it's a way to tighten the state budget, and he's not singling out any one union group, the New York Times reports. Still, with two days of "sickouts" across the state, teachers are making sure Gov. Walker knows they feel targeted.

Milwaukee schools made the call this morning to close due to teacher absences. Officials of the state's largest district say staff who didn't show up will be "punished," reports the Pierce County Herald.

Madison schools aren't in session for the third straight day today, and more closings across the state have cropped up as well.

The governor's plan calls for teachers to pay more for their pensions and health insurance to help eliminate the state's budget deficit.

Politico calls the Wisconsin protests a "a convergence that is remaking the politics of education."

Both Democrats and Republicans want reform on teacher pay and employment practices, and what's happening in Wisconsin could be the beginning of a movement.

"Teachers unions, historically one of the most powerful interest groups in American politics, are being besieged like never before -- under attack from conservative GOP governors with a zeal for budget-cutting even while taking fire from some Democrats, including President Barack Obama, who has suggested he agrees that unions can be an impediment to better schools."

From Nevada to Florida to New Jersey, state governments have challenged their own public unions with plans similar to Walker's, The Atlantic reports.

New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie believes union contracts take a toll on the state budget, according to CNN.

"I'm attacking the leadership of the union because they're greedy, and they're selfish and they're self-interested," New Jersey's Republican Gov. Chris Christie told a conservative conference Wednesday.

Wisconsin is one of about 30 states with collective bargaining laws covering state and local workers. The Wisconsin Education Association Council, the biggest teachers union in the state, says they understand the budget crisis but feel the legislation will strip away the rights of workers.

"We know these are tough times and we have made it clear to the governor and legislators that we are prepared to do our part to help our state recover. This isn't about protecting pay and benefits - it's about protecting the right to collectively bargain. That's what's being stripped away here - the rights to be represented," council president told ABC News.

President Obama told WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee that public workers should be ready to give up some slack. He did, however, call Walker's plan "unduly harsh."

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan Duncan says he'll personally call Gov. Walker, the Chicago Tribune reports. Duncan didn't provide details about what he'd say, but he promised to pressure the governor to work with the unions.

Politico points out that The National Education Association, the largest teachers union, spent $40 million on the 2010 elections.

"The backlash threatens to undercut one of the Democratic Party's most stalwart backers -- and upset a mutually beneficial relationship where the unions provided financial support and foot soldiers for Democratic campaigns, in return for political cover to protect their prerogatives in the U.S. Congress and state capitols across the nation."

Today, it was widely reported that Senate Democrats disappeared as a protest, making a vote on the bill impossible.

Fox News reports that the Wisconsin governor called the lawmaker's actions "disrespectful to the hundreds of thousands of public employees who showed up to work today and the millions of taxpayers they represent."

The Wisconsin teachers, and their union, are obviously the reason why Wisconsin is almost bankrupt. This is very serious. Wisconsin teachers, and their aides, should be required to wear bright red apples on their overcoats and outer clothing so that we might know who they are.

If you are wealthy, if you can afford out-of-your pocket all health related expenses for your children and yourself, if you can afford a $375 labor lawyer when you have been mistreated by your employer, if you are the haves and don't care about the have nots, then you are not going to support Labor Unions. True Americans, we must stand together, or we will return to the days of the "Old South" and the "Old Cuba". Let us, all of us, protect America. If we don't, people who are angry, vindictive, money hungry, and can afford to jump ship if the country goes down into Sheol, will destroy her. There are those who say they want their country back, their Country. Leaving the rest of us out. I fear these fascist and so should you. This country was founded by those fleeing persecution and maintained by those who refuse to allow her to be destroyed by evil doers. I vote for the right to choose democracy. Let us all stand together and support Labor Unions: People Governing. TIA-This is America

Unions need to be built back up. But is it possible that some unions need to be reworked?

I heard that in some states certain public workers (the police?) can work huge amounts of overtime in their last 3 years of work, and that amount determines their pensions, which can be excessive. It could be one of the reasons unions in general have gotten a bad name for themselves in the last 30 years. Perhaps some unions have over-reached a little.

I love teachers...THE GOOD ONES.
Here in Los Angeles we have the most Uneducated of many US cities...Unions rule and education takes a back seat.
Many teachers here have tenure and are unionized and dont give ANYTHING about the students and teaching because they know they can't get fired anyhow so they don't even TRY.
Id bet if they took their powerful bargaining rights away they'd try harder to get their students to pass the class instead of rambling about conspiracy theories and personal business

I agree bad teachers should be fired, but the majority of teachers are damn good ones and they don't deserve to be lumped in with such idiots.

Private sector workers are complaining that public sector workers have health and retirement benefits, because the private sectors do not have these benefits.

This is the opposite of what should be happening.

All workers should seek to restore effective retirement and healthcare benefits for private sectoror workers, and private sector workers should be insisting that it be done. Instead we have IRAs and 401(k)s which were instituted by and for the banks, and we have Obamacare which was instituted by the healthcare industry. Corporations have ostracized and marginalized workers to the point where, like crabs in a barrel, they pull each other down in their own selfish attempts to escape the prison created by the market owner. Pension envy has been insinuated into the mind of workers without benefits. The result unfortunately, looks written in stone: the country's working environment will further deteriorate, the next domino will take out all workers' benefits packages.

Obama has completely failed as a leader of the people. I seriously believe he is more concerned with his own health and the health of hiss family than he is for the welfare of the country. I think he is not a patriot, and I think we should have found a progressive candidate in the last election who was single and who had nothing to lose when standing up to the criminal cartels who now run the global financial system. America is being systematically enslaved, and there is nothing that any of us can do about it.

It is incredible, after the Republicans held up congress in the lame duck session until the dems agreed to give every man who makes a million bucks a year another million dollars in unfunded tax cuts, the Republican state congresses nation wide are demanding the people accept huge cuts in services, pay, health care and other elements which make up the American standard of living. Gov Scott went one huge step farther, taking away the basic right to demonstrate and participate in the process. We must come together as a community, in labor issue, on immigration reform, on basic human rights, and let selfish millionaires know they have gone one step too far!

in wisconin, the state takes union dues directly from paychecks and gives them directly to unions. and all the liberals really think that is an OK relationship ?
09:40 PM on 02/22/2011
They do the same in my state, but the option to do so is the teacher's. if the teacher does not wish to pay in that manner, they don't have to. Also, it's the teacher money, so what do you care?

Corporations are receiving tax breaks............so they can afford to undermine our democracy with donations to politicians, donations for charter schools to bust unions. A win, win situation. The money that should be paid to support public services is used to break the publics back. WOW, the people are finally seeing what all of the cut backs are due to.........create shortages of funds through tax breaks, then use this shortage to justify removing benefits and union protection for workers. Follow the money and you will find the answer.........what organizations are supporting these politicians financially?

So they are not above indoctrinating students with personal propaganda - not the best advertsiement for value free education. Anytime the rpotest want to come to CA and youteachers wants to walk your high paying jobs I will be hay to step in. A average teacher in our school district in CA makes and average of over 100k in salary and benefits, not including pension contributions from the state. That for a highly repititious job that they only work 9 months out of the year with breaks includedand they get vacation on top of that.

I'm a taxpayer and I am happy to pay for teachers to have nice benefits. I think they have one of the hardest jobs out there and I appreciate what they do for our country. You are one person and should not assume that all taxpaying people agree with you. Kindly use first-person singular when voicing your own opinions as I do not want to be included in your nastiness towards any group of hard-working people. Thanks so much!
