Wisconsin Protests: Russ Feingold Rallies Protesters In Madison

Russ Feingold Wisconsin Protests

First Posted: 02/18/11 04:38 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

MADISON, WIS. -- Russ Feingold may no longer be in elected office, but he can still excite crowds of labor protesters who have rallied at the state's capitol for days with virtually no appearances by prominent politicians. And he wants other public figures who say they support workers to come out and join him.

With momentum and attention building, labor organizers anticipated that Friday's turnout would be the highest yet. By the time Feingold arrived around 11:00 a.m., thousands of people already swarmed the capitol, with many back from protesting earlier in the week or having even spent the night in the building's rotunda. The balconies looking down into the rotunda were nearly impassible, and crowds marched around outside readying for the noon rally.

Feingold went to the local fire station and brought its firefighters with him to the capitol. When he arrived, protesters cheered and some even broke into chants of "Feingold for Governor."

"I just feel enormous pride in the people of Wisconsin who are coming together -- whether union or anti-union -- for the rights of workers," Feingold said in an interview with The Huffington Post. "This state is one of the originators of many of the workers' rights and protections on child labor, unemployment compensation, and almost all kinds of workers' rights. The fact that our governor is trying to destroy those rights is something worth fighting against. And I, of course, as a citizen of Wisconsin, somebody who knows the state very well, was proud to just show up and keep my support."

While President Obama has criticized Walker's proposal, which would strip away the collective bargaining rights of public employees, he has yet to make an appearance. Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl, the state's one remaining Democratic U.S. senator, has put out a short statement on the protests but has not taken a visible role.

Dawn Schueller, a spokesperson for Kohl, said the senator has received more than 450 phone calls and 1,900 emails regarding the protests and Walker's proposal. Kohl is traveling to Wisconsin from Washington, D.C. on Friday, although she didn't yet have details on his schedule for next week.

Feingold said he believed any politician who purports to be pro-labor should be out in Madison.

"I can't imagine somebody who has supported labor and has the support of working people in the state wouldn't want to at least appear at some point," said Feingold. "It's a very meaningful and very difficult effort against one of the most mean-spirited things I've seen in a long time. I know people are busy, but to me it was gratifying to see everyone working this hard against something that's really terribly wrong. It's very inspiring."

This week, Feingold launched Progressives United, a political action committee focused on combating corporate influence in politics. He pointed to the protests as the type of solution Progressives United is all about.

"This is the kind of grassroots will overcome the power grab corporate America is now seeking to get," he said.

UPDATE: On Friday, Kohl put out another statement, blasted out by the Wisconsin Democratic Party: "So many of our friends and neighbors feel that the value of their important work serving Wisconsin is being questioned. This has been a week of unprecedented mobilization for things we all believe in. My hope is that the State Senate's adjournment offers an opportunity for cooler heads and bi-partisan solutions. The same voices that teach our young people and serve and protect our public institutions have a right to be heard at the bargaining table."

What's currently happening in WI and throughout the country is proof that staying home on election day is never a good idea. The rich right wing can spend all the millions they want but at the end of the day it's the vote that matters.

My saddest moment as a Wisconsinite was Nov. 2 when we lost Mr. Feingold's representation. My happiest moments are right now. Even though the workers of this state are in terrible trouble, they have stood up to be counted, and they are doing it in a respectable way. Direct action is all we have left, and I hope other states will follow our lead as this assault on labor rights spreads across the land. We can't afford to lose what so many people have worked so hard for for so long. We all need to STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!

I agree. I work the polls and the turnout was very very sad. I hope the current state of affairs here in WI mobilizes the Dems and Independents and gets them back to the polls in the numbers we saw in 08. Remember we voted for change, but not this kind.

If there was any question of whether Kohl is running for re-election, his latest statement should be an answer. Rather than support the workers, Kohl blathers about bipartisanship. WI Dems should primary this guy. Run Feingold against him.

The Democratic leadership should be in Wisconsin demonstrating alongside the workers in protecting their rights. Their absence and silence indicates that they too are in the pockets of corporations whom they depend on more than the typical voter to get them reelected. Very sad to see that the American worker is literally "on their own", so I do not expect a quick resolution or agreement anytime soon out of Wisconsin.

Hang tough, Wisconsinites. The future of labor unions is in your hands. Please don't let it go!!!

The Dems don't have any kind of marketing plan. No united front...just silence. We voted for change but not this kind. I want Russ back.

Thanks, so much thanks to Russ Feingold! The kind of courage, integrity and standing by working people Feingold demonstrates is what we need from many more Democrats.

Works for me either way......

Sherrod Brown would make a good choice if he would run.
10:51 AM on 02/21/2011
He would have my vote. Sherrod is one of the few legislators who understands both sides of an issue and how programs and legislation works or doesn't. Legislators who can define both sides of an issue and offer a solution are rare.

how much is required by teachers before they are willing to pay for their own HC cost and retirement pensions..The taxpayers cant afford to continue to do this..we cant afford our own HC nor our retirement..ITs not fair and its only the tip of the iceberg what the taxpayers are getting screwed on in this country ..Unions have ..caused to many jobs to be shipped overseas....The bargaining rigMilwaukee, Wisconsin] MacIver News Service – For the first time in history, the average annual compensation for a teacher in the Milwaukee Public School system will exceed $100,000.

That staggering figure was revealed last night at a meeting of the MPS School Board.

The average salary for an MPS teacher is $56,500. When fringe benefits are factored in, the annual compensation will be $100,005 in 2011
hts arent being taken away..there being ..adjusted to inflation..thats fair..

If as a nation we would have instituted health care outside of employment rather than health insurance reform, we wouldn't be having this conversation.... it would instead be simply about the real reason behind most of this- collective bargaining.

No one wants to see a shutdown but if it happens, the Republicans have committed political suicide,Gingrich tried it in 1995, it did not go so well,he is still wandering in the political desert, this is another showdown about power not helping middle America, Wisconsin has become the epicenter for all this GOP madness,And it stops here, this is a huge battle of allowing the Walkers,s of the world, who have no conscience to be held accountable

I love Russ Feingold -- how could they have gotten rid of him?
07:06 PM on 02/19/2011
Two things: Progressives were disenchanted with Obama, and they stayed home from voting this past election. Democrats often don't vote in mid-term elections; especially during inclement weather. These are noted trends by various Polling firms I'm citing; not my own opinion. SCOTUS, approved "Citizens United," which now allows "anonymous" donations to political campaigns. While foreign contributions are prohibited, no one is enforcing contributions by "outsiders." That way, the Republicans have a HUGE monetary advantage over Democrats. The scale is tipped in their favor. The country has failed.

First of all it was first time voters and those with no familiarity with the mid terms that stayed home............Not progressives. Many of these were the younger first time voters and some minorities. The President was not up for election in the mid terms............

In my opinion we have reason to be disenchanted with this centrist nonsense! Polls are nothing but tools for a corporate media that follows a corporate agenda. As we all know it is more important to look at how a poll presents a question and who it was asked of.

Second) The country has not failed, Citizens United can be fixed, and I am one progressive who supports Feingold and I am pleased he is standing for workers.

A lot of outside money, that's how. Feingold was saying last summer that a lot of weird stuff was happening in Wisconsin. He wasn't kidding.

Has anyone else noticed that there is not one hateful sign carried by the protesters in Wisconsin. Many have hearts on them. I hope we can say the same thing tomorrow regarding the Tea Party coming to challenge the union members, who have already told the Gov. they will forgo all monetary demands, agreed to pay more for their health care as long as they keep their right to bargaining. The Gov. refused. Proving that it is not the money but a intentional move to kill the union.

Feingold, Dean and Sanders need to rally the masses in Wisconsin. True progressives that people respect. Leaders who care about human beings.

This is the same state that elected the much disgraced---and thankfully dead---Joe McCarthy. So electing another bum like him is no surprise. The solution is easy folks, BUY nothing that is made in Wisconsin. Then the businesses and politicans will get the message. Labor will, in the end, get the last laugh.
