Diane Russell, Maine State Lawmaker, Heads To Wisconsin To Join Protests: 'It's A Class War'

First Posted: 02/20/11 10:24 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- The protests that erupted last week in Wisconsin have attracted attention not only across the United States, but even as far away as Egypt. One of those out-of-state observers, Maine state Rep. Diane Russell (D), has decided that what is happening in Madison is so important -- even to her own Northeastern state -- that she has decided to pack up a vehicle and drive all the way out there with three of her friends to join the fight.

"I wanted to be there to show solidarity," said Russell in an interview Sunday evening with The Huffington Post as she was driving through New Hampshire. "I'm coming because if the levees break in Madison, everyone gets flooded."

Russell has been raising money through her website for the trip, which includes providing protesters with hot chocolate, coffee and hand-warmers -- cold-weather necessities for standing outside for hours in Wisconsin. She said that she had raised more than $1,000 in total. She is also tweeting and posting updates about her trip.

In an e-mail to her supporters she made clear that she believes what Walker is doing doesn't have anything to do with closing a budget gap. "This war isn't about the unions: it's a class war," she wrote. "This affects every worker and every member of the Middle Class -- what's left of it."

She's seeing similar movement in Maine, under newly elected Gov. Paul LePage (R) and his proposals to reform state regulations, which are divided into three phases. Phase I, which has been hotly debated in the state, revolves around environmental regulations. One of his most controversial proposals is to repeal the proposed ban on the chemical BPA. Phase II, explained Russell, deals with health care, and Phase III is regarding labor.

"This is a real line in the sand people need to get behind," said Russell, who said she grew up in a low-income household with two incredibly hard-working parents. "The right to organize is so fundamental to the middle class, and the middle class is sinking. People should be climbing into the middle class, not falling out of it. It really comes down to the fact that there's a line in the sand that's been drawn, and I can't not participate in democracy right now."

In a memo sent to reporters, the AFL-CIO said that it expected 50 solidarity events around the country in the coming week. The SEIU has posted a list of events around the country this week. The largest gatherings are expected to be in Ohio, where thousands have already turned out to protest Gov. John Kasich's (R) proposal that would eliminate the collective bargaining rights for state employees and curtail the rights of local-level government employees.

Russell compared the country's situation to a scene in "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers."

"Everybody is going out on their horse, knowing they're going to die and knowing they're going to lose," said Russell. "But they're going to go out on their horses anyway, and they're going to go out bravely. And they're going to stand there, and they're going to stand up, even if they lose or die. And at the end of the movie, you look to the left, and there's Gandalf. He comes with his reinforcements. And I've just been wondering, 'Where's Gandalf?' I can't ask where's Gandalf for my state if people are asking that from me."

Ms. Russell clearly understands how important the public unions are to the Democratic party. Unfortunately the willingness of politicians to give so much to the public employees in return for their vote has led to the significant unfunded liabilities that many states and cities face.

In San Jose, CA the pension and healthcare payments are absorbing 25% of the payroll budget and that amount is increasing. On the current path the city will have to lay off employees to pay for the benefits of retirees even as the economy recovers. The math just doesn't work.

Wisconsin won't forget the kindness of those who stood with us. Solidarity sister. Someday when Maine has troubles, look to the west and expect to find badgers on the horizon eager to requite such love!

I wouldn't be too quick to declare it a "class war". I'd call it a "class skirmish".

I'm not persuaded this is a class war that is localized in Wisconsin. Many states are struggling under the weight of enormous debt or lack revenues to pay for services. Organizing rights are important. I fully accept that. The problem is ever-dwindling private sector union membership. 13% of us are organized. In 1950, 25% of the working population was covered by a union contract. Most were in the private sector. Public sector employees, with few exceptions, did not get bargaining rights until the 1960s. Most presidents of national unions would likely agree that what became known as the "service model" of running a union is no longer the best model. The "organizing model" has everything the service model has and much more. It's just harder work with more barriers. The slow, sometimes quiet erosion of manufacturing jobs, outsourcing and the need for employees to deliver publicly financed services flipped the table between the private and public. There is an answer, though. When Congress decides to confer a benefit they need to fully fund it and not push unfunded mandates states. Cynical answer: unfunded mandates are designed to bankrupt states in order to force them to threaten their own citizens and employees. Charitable answer: they don't really want to confer the benefit. We've villified everyone - financiers, unions, the poor, the wealthy and the middle class. That isn't a class war. If we all are considered drags on our economy, it's just intellectually bankrupt.

Hi Y'all, Wow - what a serious debate happening. Almost 800 comments, really?!

Yesterday, we gave away about $900 worth of coffee, hot chocolate and hand warmers to people thanks to all the donations that have come in. Folks were so grateful to know people around the country were thinking of them. And yes - pizza is flying everywhere!

The Rotunda is amazing; there is so much energy there, it's like being surrounded by God. There is something magical here in Madison. It's a pilgrimage all Progressives should take. Check out the ongoing blog: solidaritywisconsin.wordpress.com.

This has been a life-changing trek for me. There is no going back. Thank you!!

The question isn't how public employees managed to get the benefits of union membership, but why everybody else doesn't go for it! In the most prosperous days of our economy, unions were strong. The middle class was strong and prosperous because of unions. Don't say the private sector can't do it, because the private sector did do it then. I was involved in the days of teachers unions forming. It was dangerous, you could get fired, you could have to strike for weeks without a penny...but we stood together and stuck it out, no matter how tough it got. And we reaped the benefits. So rather than say the teacher's unions should go, why don't you do what we did? The middle class is being destroyed by big money, and this is a critical moment in determining whether there will be no middle class, just rich and poor, just as in the politically unstable banana republics. If you want to reconstruct the middle class, reconstruct unions. There's NOTHING they can do when everybody sticks together. You're seeing it right now with these unions. We need to support them now, because it's not going to stop there. This is a major GOP plan to serve their super rich overlords by assuring low wages and the destruction of a major financial support to Democrats. Don't allow it, and start your own process now. SOLIDARITY!!

*************(Once again I DON'T blame the UNIONS. If someone offered ME (FREE TAXPAYERS) money, I would probably take the MONEY too!

These POLITICIANS made these deals with the (UNIONS) to get the UNIONS (VOTE)! That is the TRUTH! They used YOUR TAXPAYERS dollars as a bargaining chip to GET VOTES! And BOTH REPUBLICAN and DEMOCRATS do this. So **(WAKE UP AMERICA)**!!!!

It does NOT matter whether YOU are a (DEMOCRAT or a REPUBLICAN), because BOTH (DEMOCRAT and REPUBLICAN) POLITICIANS sell us out for a VOTE!

We have to HOLD these **(REPUBLICAN and DEMOCRATIC POLITICIANS)** accountable with OUR TAXPAYERS money!!! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!)*****************************

"Free taxpayer's money?" Give me a break! FYI: public employees pay taxes. They also make less than private employees in jobs requiring the same level of skill and education. The pension problems we have in many states aren't the fault of the teachers and other employees -- they are the result of low revenues caused by a crashed economy that was brought about by the Republican policies of deregulation and lower taxes for the wealthy.

Wake up Ken Jason!!! You've been gamed. It's not the unions you need to worry about but rather the bankers, the corporations, and the politicians on both sides of the aisle that answer to their call.

Public employees have not experienced the kind of cost adjustments as the private sector. The government budgets are collapsing and changes have to happen.

My thoughts are prayers go out to the Governor, legislators and their families. They must be fearing for the safety of their families. Unions have proven violent in the past and the present.

Rubbish. If anything, it's the anti-union people who are the most violent. Read your history.

I have been thinking that the Democrats in exile could show up in Ohio to bolster support there, but I am not sure if extradition applied to a call to quorum.

Three cheers for Rep. Russell!

Frankly, I'm pretty pleased and excited to see U.S. citizens doing something about what they believe in, exercising their Constitution-given rights. There's been too much passivity in this country the past 20 years or so. Diane Russell is a spark that might strike a few fires for justice around the country.

And, BTW, the most important job anyone can ever have is being a teacher. If you haven't done it, keep your mouth shut about the pay. A good teacher is a country's greatest asset, second only to being a good parent. And, believe me, it is also the hardest job one can do. Much harder than being a CEO.

Okay, Everyone, this is going to be the start of the ending of our 2 party system IF the Unions in Wisconsin are destroyed. Right now, out of the top 10 contributors to the political parties 7 are Pro Republican and 3 (ALL UNION GROUPS) are Pro Democrat. If the Unions fail, then there will basically be NO big Pro Democratic contributors, except for George Soros. The outspending of Republicans versus Democrats on election campaigns will be so lopsided and so unfair, that it would be like for every $1 the Democrats have to spend for campaigns, the Republicans will have At Least $100 or even $1,000 for their campaigns! Does Anyone here want this to happen? That's why the decision made in Wisconsin will either decide 1 of 2 things: 1) If the Unions are allowed to continue Collective Bargaining, then all will be as well as expected and we 98% can start pushing back against Congress to FINALLY stop all this Corporate Welfare, Subsidies and Tax Breaks for the Rich that are killing our Economy and start creating JOBS again. OR 2) The Union loses, other Republican governors will do the same in their states and the Republican Party will basically have TOTAL CONTROL of Congress, the Supreme Court and the Presidency for the REST OF OUR LIVES. Imagine what will happen then: We will become Slaves to the top 2% and there will be NO ONE to speak for us...Too horrible to think about...
06:40 PM on 02/21/2011
Sorry to burst your bubble but the reason the Repugs can do this is because there are no two real parties. The Democrats have given up so much and have cow-towed to the rich that they've made themselves obsolete. They're both playing for the same side while the agenda gets moved along the facist scale. Keep in mind though, they had no choice , for the rich would crush them otherwise,. Any other belief is just your average delusion.

Swedenworks: I agree that some Democrats have caved into Republican demands in Congress, but what I'm talking about is "Citizens United" and their winning the Supreme Court decision that Corporations are People Too! and can spend All the Money they want without having to tell Who is giving the money. I for one, am not going to just sit back and become a complete Slave to these Rich without a fight--but MY fight is with Words, NOT Violence!. Every since Reagan started the 'trickle down economics' the Rich have been getting more and more and more. Now, they don't want to give back one dime if they can get away with it and they are being allowed to keep getting more and more and more right this minute. Those Rich may be hiding behind big estates and gated communities and Think they are Safe, but there are so many Millions of us Middle Class and Working Poor that, short of trying to b0mb us protesters (like Khadafi tried to do today in Libya, Thankfully NOT successfully!) some of us are going to start to Snap when there are fewer jobs, more stress, more anger, less job stability, etc... and some of us will 'go off the deep end' and start committing violent acts of desperation against Anyone, Anywhere. We have Got to get things under control NOW or our Democratic Government will be Gone for Good. The Snapping sound you hear is getting closer every day...

I agree collective bargaining is a worker right and should not be abolished. However the stain on unions in this country comes from what they tried (and did) in the private sector. People familiar with the antics of the UAW in Detroit are scared of same happening with their government. As bad as politicians are, they're better at governing than an angry mob pissed because they have to pay another $10 a month for their health care.

I have to agree with othel. Unions do not have a good record. Violence is integrally woven into their history and continues today.
People blame the rich, but time and again it has been proven in America that fortunes are not forever. Setting up the 'rich' like it was a set group of people is a lie. Success is rarely a matter of control and more of effectiveness. Real experience has proven that people like Gore are the true elitists becoming wealthy not from innovation but from fear.

Unions will be busted ever more so across the nation, pit people amongst each other until marketing, advertising, all medical services except emergencies, are either outsourced or insourced. Then we beg for crumbs. As in the Phillipines all course instruction as soon as school is started, all courses are taught in English, and this will provide a new opportunity for new hires who will work much less to teach our students. Meat packing and construction unions busted, primarily illegal immigrants hired, Americans need not apply.
