Mount Bulusan Erupts: Major Volcano Eruption In Philippines

Mount Bulusan Erupts

First Posted: 02/20/11 08:55 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Philippines volcano Mount Bulusan erupted on Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. local time, per the ABS-CBN News Channel.

Ash and steam from the explosion reached as high as 2 kilometers, according to the report.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer posted this photo of the Mount Bulusan eruption to Posterous.

Journalist Harold Geronimo of Manila, Philippines, was the first to report the eruption on Twitter, sending this tweet from his Blackberry minutes after the eruption.

Mount Bulusan had increased volcanic activity in November 2010, spewing ash and steam over several days (the photo above is from Nov. 2010). Families were evacuated at the time.

UPDATE: The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed the ash explosion and says it was caused by steam buildup. The institute advises all aircraft to avoid the vicinity and warns that the ash emission could trigger respiratory illnesses for those near the volcano. People are advised not to enter the 4-kilometer danger zone around Mount Bulusan.

There has also been somes erious earthquake damage not too far away in NewZeland. While not alarmingly high on the R scale, it was shallow and near a city so buildings collapsed and people are missing:

This has very little to do with what we've done to this planet, thus far. This is a periodic occurrence of cosmic proportions. We will survive, the earth will THRIVE.

In addition to a map, it would be nice to learn which island of the Philippines's 7,000+ we're talking about. Oh, I suppose I could Google it myself, but that's almost as retro as looking it up in an Atlas.

It's Luzon, the biggest island. The volcano is on the southeastern tip of the island.

A map would be nice.
The more maps the better if you ask me. Lots of people need to be reminded exactly where we are and where the trouble spots are located.

Wow 00 was just thinking the same thing. Cannot believe they don't show you where this is in the Philippines.

These sort of thing will become more frequent as we get closer to the Day Of Doom predicted in the Hepicales Prophecy: July 22 948384. That's just 946,373 years to go - then we're all gonna die.

Be warned: THE END IS NOT NIGH!

Seems many ignorant and /or insensitive remarks on this volcano. My spouse grew up in Naga City, approx 80 km from this volcano, and has family there.
For those not caring about the impact of these frequent tragedies upon the people, I suggest you simply refrain from posting.
To twist it to serve your personal agenda is an insult to humanity.

Dear God.

Not for nothing Big Dude, but you MISSED AGAIN. I have been diligently praying and praying and I even burned a candle while fumbling with a rosary. And once again you don't come through with a Volcano on the Republican Party Caucus. All I wanted was a little hysteria and some running and screaming and you can't deliver?

I'm done, back to sacrificing to Zeus. I hear he is much better with the lightning bolts.

Signed

Did that Volcano get a carbon burn permit from Al Gore prior to erupting? Hell to PAY! Hell to PAY!

Silly comment. Al Gore has nothing to do with the science. Al Gore has nothing to say about natural CO2 emissions. Nothing you ever say about Al Gore will ever erase a single comma in a single one of the thousands of peer-reviewed climate studies dating back many decades.

In other words, "blah blah blah Al Gore blah blah blah" is a thoroughgoing waste of everyone's time if you're trying to make a point about climate.

That should cool down global warming.

Now there is no need for carbon taxes, "smart" cars and low flow toilets.

Drill baby drill!!!

"That should cool down global warming."

No, it won't. This is not a particularly big explosion, and in any event the cooling effects of ash eruptions are very, very short-lived.

Too late, I already fired up my fleet of SUV's and they are idling in the driveway. I need to melt all this ice that we have.
