Egyptian Baby Named Facebook

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/21/11 11:09 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Egyptian father Jamal Ibrahim has reportedly named his newborn daughter "Facebook" to honor the social media site's role in Egypt's revolution.

According to TechCrunch, Egypt's Al-Ahram newspaper reported the following:

A young man in his twenties wanted to express his gratitude about the victories the youth of 25th of January have achieved and chose to express it in the form of naming his firstborn girl "Facebook" Jamal Ibrahim (his name.) The girl's family, friends, and neighbors in the Ibrahimya region gathered around the new born to express their continuing support for the revolution that started on Facebook. "Facebook" received many gifts from the youth who were overjoyed by her arrival and the new name. A name [Facebook] that shocked the entire world.

Facebook was used to organize the initial January 25 protest in Tahrir Square. Since then, Egyptians taking part in the uprising used Twitter, YouTube and a host of other sites, in addition to Facebook, to communicate and coordinate.

This is a disgrace.

Spinsters want to raise fb'S stock price on second market so they write up this junk!
The Internet's biggest contribution to the Egyptian revolution was when the net went down!

Ten everyone gt onto the street and things began. Facebook sparks nothing, it is now just another tool to manufacture consent and keep us docile. When it was taken away then people got to work. Want to be free? Delete your facebook!

How do I know? I am Egyptian and was in Tahrir sq fighting during the bloodiest days. I saw many die as we battled to hold the sq on Feb 2nd from an army of gov thugs. We battled for 2 straight days with no food or water against Armed thugs. This is how we won our freedom. Not online! I get back here and now I am hearing about babies named facebook?

Instead of talkin about the life & death battle of Feb 2nd where over 100 egypians died we r hearing this racist garbage!!!! Thus was based off a joke article in an Egyptian news paper. Tech crunch doesn't give a damn about Egypt nor do they understand the Egyptian sense o humor, they are just pushing their agenda even if it means humiliating Egypt!

It only helped in egypt at the beginning because public meetings were to dangerous. After a point it became more an obstacle than a help. Thank god they took it down!

Wake up america!!!

I can't imagine what she'll go through with a name like that. It's a good thing they didn't use Google. LOL

It's kind of sad, a real-life Egyptian analog of Eddie Murphy as Buckwheat mocking black families by calling a kid "Cream of Wheat."

That poor kid will probably be so teased about that name that he'll become a serial killer. That or every kid in Egypt will be named things like Yahoo for the next five years.

This guy is great! That's how to do marketing.

Seize the moment America... Facebook is your comeback. We can recover world support, if we could stop being so snide and snickering and instead focus on the positive, and what unites America with the world.
01:54 PM on 02/24/2011
Wait a minute now.......

are you really suggesting, as it seems you are, that Facebook will save America, cure its ills,
etc?

Facebook is the comeback of America? Really? That's what we've got? Facebook?!

If that's the case maybe we should just stay where we are.

My suggestion was that Egypt used Facebook to spark a revolution. That's what I mean by comeback, forging a positive bond between America and Egypt, et al.

But America is just full of cynical, whining, negative comments.

He should have considered 'baby friendly' names like Bebo or Hi5 instead.
