What Would A Government Shutdown Look Like?

If President Obama and congressional Republicans do not reach an agreement on how to fund the final seven months of the fiscal year, some military veterans might not receive benefits checks and other Americans would be unable to apply for Social Security. The State Department might not issue new passports, unemployment statistics would not publish as scheduled, museums and national parks would close, and worse - piles of elephant manure might pile up in a National Zoo parking lot because workers can't ship it away for composting.

If the Democrats don't win this fight, than I don't think our country has a future, and if they negotiate with the far right, our country as a whole will deteriorate and Americans will be way more than they are now. I think even COngressman Ryan from Wisconsin knows he isn't politically immortal, and being from Wisconsin, knows that his budget ideas are not going to be taken seriously. That is why he is trying to make peace with the Democrats, but peace at any price on Pelosi's behalf would be a mistake. She has to stick to her guns and know that history is going to prove her right and these radical righties have a plan that will bring our nation into a third world post industrial society.

If there is a government shut down, it should be the GOP that would hurt tremendously and should be blamed, but the Democrats sometimes don't communicate things to the American people very well. Since this new congress has come into power, the nightmare is just as predictable as I thought it would be.

If it shuts down, the best strategy for the Democrats is to communicate to people across the country what kind of services they will lose if the GOP budget was passed. PBS, women's health, children's health care assistance, education, roads and infrastructure, energy alternatives research, and so much more. I think even many Republicans if they could actually be honest for once, and were asked if they favor these cuts, even they would not want cuts in at least 1 or 2 of these areas. Republicans have to pay their taxes, and if you look at the reddest states in the country, Idaho and Utah, Boise and Salt Lake have libraries, schools, roads that they value. If Republicans were unwilling to spend any money at the state level, these places would look more like Little house on the prairie.

This is what the Democrats have to communicate and should run ads in swing districts to reveal their newly elected represenatives true colors.

I beginning to think the republicans have every intention of shutting down the government, no matter what, so that the economy is totally destroyed....blaming it on President Obama....they really don't care what happens to our country as long as their objective of President Obama being a one term president is met.

Honetly, I think are a few in Congress that while they understand they have to raise money to be competitive are not bought and paid for by corporate interests.

However, like I said, there are few, and they are not in the leadership positions.

Someone here know what a 'real spending cut' is to Paul Ryan? Surely cutting off ALL Federal funding to Planned Parenthood because someone thinks they use federal money to provide abortions (they DON'T and NEVER HAVE) is NOT a 'real spending cut'?
However--I know a good way to get the House and Senate Tea Partiers to sit up and pay attention--just send that elephant poop to them c/o the Senate and the House of Representatives......Now THAT would really make John Boehner cry!

The assertion that PP does not use federal tax dollars to fund ALL their operations is either disingenuous at best or intentionally misleading. If assertion was true, then why not simply spin out the abortion services portion of PP and let them raise money on their own? Dollars are fungible. PP takes tax dollars to fund their operations. Their operations include abortion. Therefore, tax dollars are funding abortions. QED.

Your argument is full of holes. The biggest hole is that Planned Parenthood itself has open books and there is nothing that shows Federal money being used for abortions. Besides that--NOT funding Planned Parenthood at all stops ALL services--pap smears, birth control, ob-gyn services to women who cannot afford a 'society' doctor, sex education (or don't you believe in that either?) There are a WHOLE range of services that Plannned Parenthood provides with those dollars---and by the way----there are NO Planned Parenthood Centers that are equipped to 'provide abortions'. QED

Well right now the Dems can't shut down the government. The Republicans are in control so it's in their hands.

I don't want to see a shutdown but considering the damage it will do the GOP, I won't be crying about it too much.
