Terri Ford Adopts Puppy That Woman Tried To Mail

Mailed Puppy

TARA BANNOW   02/18/11 06:41 PM ET   AP

MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota puppy that made headlines when it was saved from a likely deadly trip through the mail went home with a new owner Friday – an exuberant Minneapolis woman who was thrilled to welcome the fuzzy black dog into her life.

"I never win anything," said Terri Ford, who threw her arms in the air in excitement after learning she had won the drawing for Guess, a 5-month-old schnauzer-poodle mix.

Nearly 50 people went to a Minneapolis animal shelter Friday in hopes of adopting Guess. Animal control officials held a drawing for the puppy's new owner – Ford's name was drawn first, and she passed the application process.

Ford, who wouldn't give her age, said she lives alone and is unemployed, so she has plenty of time to housebreak a dog.

"I think it might be good to get out of my pajamas and out of the house," she said before the drawing.

Dressed in a long, pink coat, glittery boots and earrings with the word "rebel" on them, Ford said she heard about Guess on the news.

The puppy became a celebrity three weeks ago after postal workers heard noise coming from a box addressed to Georgia and saw the package move. They opened it to find the dog inside. Officials say the trip would have killed the puppy. His former owner, 29-year-old Stacey Champion, has been charged with animal cruelty. She was attempting to mail Guess to her son as a birthday present.

Hundreds of callers from Minnesota and around the world asked to adopt Guess, who became city property Monday when Champion failed to post bond.

"He tugs at everyone's heartstrings," Ford said. "He's not only adorable, but he's gone through some trauma."

Ford, who used to be a legal assistant, said she already has a black cat named Danvers, after the character Mrs. Danvers in an Alfred Hitchcock film. She said she will think of a new name for Guess and expects him to get along great with her cat. She admitted, however, that she hasn't yet asked her landlord for permission to have a dog.

Shelter officials have been excited about the attention Guess generated and have used it to draw attention to other homeless animals. Ten pets were adopted last week, shelter official Jeanette Wiedemeier Bower said. Usually, only one or two animals are adopted per week this time of year, she said.

Before and after the drawing, visitors toured the animal cages and admired other dogs and cats that were up for grabs. Six more animals were adopted after Friday's drawing.

"He has really allowed us to turn lemons into lemonade," Wiedemeier Bower said of Guess.

Although she doesn't know the family, Debi Douglas, of St. Paul, hoped to win the puppy and return it to Champion's son. Douglas came very close to making that happen; her name was chosen second in the drawing.

"I'm an advocate for an innocent child getting his birthday gift," Douglas said. "We were all children at one point in time, right?"

The description of her boots alone cause me to worry about her ability to care for this dog. This is why adoption agencies for dogs should only be run by gay people ... they know how to dress. If gays had run this place, that little puppy would have been cleaned, groomed, and dressed in a matching hat/dress ensemble that matched the color of it's nail polish. Okay, just kidding ... we all know that gay people eat their pets. NO! Just kidding!

An unemployed woman who doesn't have permission from her landlord to have a dog? Doesn't this humane society check anything on who it gives animals to.

I don't doubt her good heart, but that dog could find itself in a shelter again. More cruel and unusual punishment.

I am sure this woman's heart is in the right place, but owning a dog is really expensive. My vet bills are insane. One reason shelters are overflowing is because people can no longer afford to keep their pets due to unemployment and foreclosure. I am also really surprised this shelter gave the dog to a person whose landlord may not let her keep it. The shelters in my area would not take that chance. The only bright light is that he pup did not go to the person who was planning to give it to the kid whose mom tried to mail it. Dogs are 10-15 year commitments and should not be used as gifts to strangers (actually, they should not be gifts period).

Hoping for the best for this sweet pup.

It will be alright, cuz if the woman's landlord won't allow her to have a puppy, she can always mail it back.

Let's see if I've got this right...an unemployed woman who may or may not get permission from her landlord to keep this little cutie is the very best applicant the shelter could find???? What did they do, hold a mirror under this woman's nose to see if she was breathing?? This poor little dog has yet to catch a break!!!

So the Minneapolis animal shelter that had the dog awarded the dog to a woman who is unemployed and who hasn't asked her landlord if she can have a dog yet. This woman "passed the application process". How is that possible? Musta been a really difficult application process, huh??
I wouldn't give a dog to an unemployed woman who hadn't even gotten landlord permission if it was MY dog....that's for sure. Makes you wonder about the people running that shelter...they probably give dogs to people that eat them.

My husband and I had to fill out a lengthy application, take off an afternoon to wait three hours for an interview, wait two weeks for a house inspection, go through a credit check, offer two written references, get a vet to vouch for us and still were not able to adopt a dog from a shelter because our yard is not adequately fenced in. We own our home and said we'd fence it in, yet our application was still denied.

I work from home, we have no kids, no other pets and we're completely fine financially. We've gone through this process twice (the second time didn't require a credit check) and we've been turned down so we're done with trying to rescue a dog.

I am glad that the dog has a home, and that this shelter wasn't as hard-nosed about its process.

Your shelter was ridiculous! I've never heard of such stringent requiremets. Please don't give up on rescue though. Petfinder.org is all about rescued breeds and all shelters/rescues are on there. You can find a different one that will be more equitable I'm sure.

BTW, I was turned down by a rescue I volunteered at FOR A YEAR because the head said I was a single woman and single women might fall in love with men who don't like dogs.

That has to be the st00pidest excuse for not letting someone adopt a dog that I've ever heard. Ever. Bar none.

Lots of shelters are set up by people who want to help animals ... but eventually they get more involved in the rescue process and the foster-care process ... and they stop trying to find homes for the animals. It sounds like that is what you ran into. The people who start and run these places tend to be a little off their rockers if you ask me. I was interested in adopting a parrot once. I went to the rescue-fostercare meeting to see the birds they had there. No one would even talk to me about the adoption process ... they were all about talking about what the birds in their care do and what the birds are like and how you should care for them. But when it came to actually discussing adoption, no one wanted to talk about that. So I left without a bird or even an idea of what I had to do to adopt one. Bottom line: these people were now in a social club called "parrot fostercare" and they really weren't looking for any new "members" to join the club. It was pretty sad ... for the parrots!

While I'm sure she's a great person, I do find it odd that they gave her to puppy since she is unemployed. When I got my kitty, (see picture) from a small private shelter. I had to answers tons of questions, sign a pledge not to declaw her, and agree to give her back if I couldn't take care of her. One of the questions they asked is if I was employed, and financially able to provide for her. Having said that, I hope she and the puppy are very happy together, she seemed thrilled to have him in her home. As a Minnesotan, it's nice to see a happy ending for someone including a puppy from your own State.

Her cat is probably not going to like the addition to the household. It's one thing if they grew up together or if the dog was there first. Cats are extremely territorial and cat is probably going to hiss & swipe at that puppy.

I don't have a good feeling about this situation for a number of reasons. The woman seems off.

The poor puppy looks nervous.

I agree! Something is definitely off with her. For one, in my house, pets are family members, so I didn't like her comment about never winning anything. The dog is more than just some door prize! Additionally, putting her outfit aside, the fact that she hadn't even talked to her landlord is just plain weird.

I had the same initial reaction to the "winning" comment. But then I thought about it and realized I felt like I had won when I was allowed to adopt one of my three. So who knows?

Re the comment about the cats -- I am hoping the shelter at least made her bring the cat in to meet the dog before letting her sign the adoption papers. That won't guarantee peace when the dog is actually in the house, but it is a necessary first step.

Dogs and cats can get along great. Many moons ago, I found a puppy on the freeway and took her home to live with an ill-tempered Tom cat. The cat was annoyed at first and would take swipes at the puppy. One day, however, I looked outside and saw the cat sleeping ON the dog. They were BFFs after that. Happens.

The woman does seem a bit strange, I agree. You never know about the cat though. We got a dog a few years after we got our cat, and they got along great. Recently we added another dog to the mix (now two dogs, two cats) and after a rocky start, everyone gets along just fine. Hopefully things work out for the little puppy.

Wow. I agree....no permission from her landlord AND no job? I coudln't get a dog from the shelter becuase i didn't have a back yard!!!

I was unemployed when I was adopted by my dog. I was doing freelance work to make ends meet and my dog just fit right in. Being unemployed doesn't prevent someone from taking care of an animal, in fact it probably helps to be off a few weeks to help the little guy adjust, house train, etc.

What happens if the landlord says no to the dog? She gives him to the pound? She needed to verify that beforehand and I'm surprised the shelter let her take him without confirmation.

I've got 2 dogs and was unemployed for 10 out of the last 24 months. It's not that costly to take care of little pup like that.

It's not just about feeding the pets. What if they get sick and need expensive treatment? I have pet insurance for my four cats and German Shepherd, but would still have to pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement. Who knows what medical issues this puppy has, considering where she came from and belonged to someone negligent enough to try to ship her in a box..
