Bookseller Barnes & Noble has tapped Interpublic Group of Cos.' Mullen, Boston, as its creative agency. The retailer is planning to refresh its brand with an effort that includes an estimated $40 million investment in marketing and a new look for stores, people familiar with the matter said.

They won't bring back the CDs; they aren't making enough of a profit on them. Costco got rid of CDs awhile back.

They need to focus on their core, reading, and they need to do it in a way that makes people think it's interesting and cool, otherwise they won't get new people in the store. And they need more chairs!

As far as a physical makeover, I don't know. The stores are classy looking. My only gripe is no matter where you go in the country the tend to follow the same three models. I look for uniqueness. B&N Nashua, NH for example has ceiling windows, rafters, and the cafe has a gas fireplace. The store stands out.

As far as stock is concerned, get rid of the damn toys and bring back more books and CD's.
