I see that " Looking Glass Books " in Portland is closing too!

Dang!

I wish the owner luck with her online venture. Closing a business is never an easy decision, and as a lover of books and bookstores, it's always sad to see one go. Growing up in a small town, a local bookstore was like having a key to paradise.

I have been fortunate to live in towns that still have independent bookstores. They are a place of community gathering, often hosting unique literary events and promoting independent authors and artists. In accepting the inevitable changes of the world, I find it difficult to embrace the concept of disappearing independent stores especially bookstores, and the closings of libraries. They might only be brick and mortar but they hold the cultures, words, languages, thoughts, and promise of humanity. I am frightened by the prospect of a country without its bookstores and libraries, and saddened by the loss of another independent business.

A moment of silence...

There's a bookstore in LA which has the bookshelves from a number of its defunct fellows. It's kind of morbid when you realize that's what they are.

Quote form the article:"While she’s planning to close the “brick and mortar” portion of her business, she doesn’t plan to go out
of business entirely. The exact details of her new venture, however, have not yet been made public."
Obviously, she's moving online trying to cash in on her brand name loyalty. Smart move, if her online venture offers significantly better prices than her brick-and mortar store.
