Fernando Bermudez Files Lawsuit After Being Wrongfully Imprisoned

Innocent Man Imprisoned For 18 Years Sues City For $30 Million

A man who spent nearly two decades in prison for a crime a judge said he didn't commit is seeking monetary revenge.

In 1992, Fernando Bermudez was found guilty of shooting and killing a 16-year-old boy outside the Marc Ballroom in Union Square.

In November of 2009, he was freed from prison after a judge ruled that a witness in the case had lied and Bermudez was innocent.

Now Bermudez has filed a $30 million lawsuit against the city, its prosecutors and the NYPD for putting him behind bars.

Bermudez cried and hugged one of his lawyers when the judge declared him innocent.

Prosecutors disputed the judge's decision.

"We don't think the defense has shown that there was anything wrong with the verdict," said Chief Assistant District Attorney Mark Dwyer after Bermudez was exonerated.
