As a college undergrad, in about '58, I was granted an interview with Faulkner. Like any sophomore, I hoped to settle matters once and for all, so I asked, "WHY DO YOU WRITE?" The old man in his white suit puffed his pipe a bit, then responded, "To keep in liquor and cigarettes." I was told then by a professor that WF was drinking bourbon, the best he could find.

Incredible! How long did you have with him? Do you have the interview? What was he like? Outrageous! Was it one of the greatest moments of your life? What did you think of him?

Faulkner was not gregarious, having borderline contempt for the general public. But, I would have loved to interview him, too.
