Arizona Lawmakers Push To Make Colt Revolver Official State Gun

CARMEN CASTRO   02/23/11 06:39 PM ET   AP

PHOENIX — The Arizona Legislature is considering a bill to designate a historic Colt revolver the official state firearm, angering gun-control activists who denounced the measure as insulting and a waste of time when the state is facing serious economic problems.

The measure comes less than two months after the deadly shooting in Tucson that killed six and wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a former Arizona legislator. The mass shooting has prompted gun-control supporters to push for tougher weapons laws, although that is unlikely to happen in an Arizona Legislature that has become a national leader in passing pro-gun laws in recent years.

Sen. Ron Gould, sponsor of the bill, said he sees nothing wrong with honoring a firearm for its contribution to the state's western heritage. "We spent about 120 seconds of committee time on that bill," Gould said. "So it's not like it takes an overwhelming amount of time. Generally, everybody asking why we are doing this takes longer than actually doing it."

With the state centennial celebrations under way, Colt lobbyist Todd Rathner says the bill is fitting to honor the state's founders. Rathner said the Colt Single-action Army revolver played a major role in protecting the mines and settlements during the late 19th century.

"Arizona was founded by rugged individuals who took care of themselves and did so largely with a Colt Single Action Army Revolver on their hip," said Rathner, who is pushing the firearm bill which would make Arizona one of the first two states to recognize an official gun.

Anti-gun activists like Hildy Saizow, president of Arizonans for Gun Safety thinks it's a bad idea altogether.

"First of all, that our legislature would be spending time on this when the public wants state legislatures to focus on things like the state budget makes no sense," Saizow said. "What we need to be focused on is how do we prevent gun violence, that's the public issue."

Utah lawmakers have passed a similar bill to designate the Browning M1911 – a semiautomatic pistol – as the state's official gun. The bill awaits the governor's signature.

The Senate Appropriations Committee voted 9-4 early Wednesday to advance the measure. The bill enjoys widespread support – almost half of the Legislature is co-sponsoring the measure.

Oh, BTW, The picture chosen for this piece is wrong. Those are not 1873 Colts. The bottom two look like 1860 Colts, and the top revolver a Walker Colt variant, probable a replica. The 1873 is the familiar Western "Cowboy gun" using the .45 LC cartridge. The guns in the picture are all cap-and-ball pistols of an earlier technology.

Thanks. We don't have the rights for any other Colt pictures, but we'll hide the picture on this story so nothing is visible.

FYI, several of us commented on that earlier as well. Slightly off photos are so common here on HP that it is almost a running joke as to what the photo dept will get wrong next -- almost one of the universal constants like death, taxes, and HP photo mix-ups.

Guns are who we are, Guns tamed the frontier, pushed back the savage, wrested the land from peoples not of our folk. Not without cause may states focus on guns of particular historical significane to each of them.

Utah has, or is securing, the M1911, in honor or Utah native, John Browning. Here in Pennsylvania, we have the Pennsylvania Long Rifle. Crafted by Pennsylvanians and prized throughout North America, the traditional patched-ball rifle is sometime mistakenly referred to as the "Kentucky" rifle, but we know better.

Arizona would do well to adopt the 1873 Colt Single-Action Army. Missouri could settle on the Hawken, Massachusetts has so many to choose from as the name "Springfield" is attached to so many historic firearms. The industrial revolution got its state in New England Gun factories. Texas has the Walker Colt, the original "Magnum," purpose-built for Texas Ranger Indian-fighters. Mississippi has its M1841 eponymous rifle so prominent in the Mexican War. The list goes on and on.

Guns are our history, our spirit and our song.

Such a tough call for California. Do we go with Weatherby, EMF Company (SAA revolvers), or stick with an iconic movie gun like the S&W Model 29? My vote goes with Dirty Harry. Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya...... punk ;)

Unfortunately, S&W is in MA, not CA, as I recall.

BTW, I just got to fire a full up magnum round in a model 29. I'm not one who likes recoil, but it was COOL.

Let CA have a "Ring of Fire" handgun like Lorcin, Davis, Phoenix, Bryco, or Raven.

Gus are your history, spirit and song--not mine. I don't need one to feel like an American or a man. I'm very sorry that people like you exist in this country.

I once thought atha civil discourse with people like you could be beneficial to this country. I no longer believe that. You need to have your beloved pieces taken away--period.

I can sympathize with the waste of time and money aspect, but only about as much as for a state bird or flower, or song. The anti-gun nuts can stuff their outrage.

Context defines most standards of civility. You can bark like a dog and crawl on your elbows on Friday night, but not in church on Sunday morning. Hosting a pistol up the Phoenix State House flagpole, six weeks after a massacare puts indeliable ink on already dark leopard spots.

And here you can see the Legislature worshiping worshiping at shrine of the gun http://twitgoo.com/1zje3b. These people think professional businesses will be attracted to a state where everyone is encouraged to carry guns. I think they are batty and a distraction from the rotten state of Arizona's economy and the fact that our Governor is trying to cut 280,000 people from Medicaid dispute AZ having a $235,000,000,000 ($235 billion) economy and keeping these people on Medicaid only costs 1/4 of 1% of that economy but the media does not seem to care about that, so those of us who do must resort to adding notes to other posts.

The symbol of the pistol and taking a knife to poor children's health care seem to go hand and glove. Since it requires a two third majority in the legislature to raise taxes, the lowest in fifty years and unheard of during wartime, there is little chance of change in Northern AZ. Fiftteen percent of tax payers payers, pay for almost of the rest, so everyone stays cheap, in the majority, and services go down the swirling clockwise opening.
