Japan Population Sees Slowest Growth Since 1920

Japan Population

TOKYO — Japan's population has grown at the slowest pace since 1920 as the rapidly aging country grapples with extremely low birthrates, a census report showed Friday.

Japan, the world's 10th most populated country, said its population stood at 128.05 million as of October 2010, up 0.2 percent from the previous census in 2005.

The figure marked the slowest population growth since Japan began a census in 1920, said Keiko Nozaki, an official at the internal affairs ministry, which released the once-in-five-years census data.

"The weak population growth was mainly due to Japan's very low birthrates," Nozaki said.

While the census showed marginal population growth, Japan's population has continued to decline since 2007, the ministry said.

Like in other advanced countries, young Japanese people are waiting to get married and choosing to have fewer children because of careers and lifestyle choices.

Japan's fertility rate – the average number of children born to a woman over her lifetime – stood at 1.37 in 2008, one of the lowest in the world, the government said.

Japan's population is also aging faster than anywhere else. The government said the number of its citizens who are at least 100 years old rose 10 percent to 44,449 in 2010.

The number of Japanese who are 65 and older hit a record 29.4 million in 2010.

For a country where porn and sexual fetishes are so accepted, it's amazing that more people aren't getting it on.

Who will take care of them when they get old? Do they expect one child to take care of both parents, plus their own family (if they have one)? Will they be lining up at the Soylent Green factory?

You are probably right. The technology to miniaturise them is not quite there yet but it should come soon because holographic technology is on the way too.

Now, a LOT of other countries INCLUDING US need to slow down the growth. World is becoming overpopulated------fact------lousy for planet, people, animal life, food supplies, et al------- there is a decreasing quality of life w/ a massive increase in people-------yet, no one---libs or conservatives want to dialogue meaningfully on this---------------revolting

This is where you see that some capitalists are fools (not all, just some extremists). Japan already is overpopulated and therefore, its economy can't be sustainable on the long run (basically, they live on their food and raw material importations). However, some think that its population must keep on increasing to avoid depression. Life is not a big Wall Street, it's a long process and you can't always have a short-term vision. Maybe we should start replacing growth in our vocabulary with sustainibility.

Two weeks ago HP said that the low birth rate was due to the Japanese love of porn.

The problem in Japan, as in Italy, is that when a generation does not reproduce itself, then that means there are fewer in the NEXT generation who will reproduce, and so on. In Italy and Japan, this is producing a downward economic trend.

Japan is a rich country and a slight population decline is a good thing in many ways.

Maybe some people should stop being so pretentious, smug and condescending towards a culture that is not their own.

Maybe some people should realize that it's illegal and immoral to kill sentient beings for food regardless of ones culture.

Extinction isn't the danger brought on situation. Social and economic depression and the possibility of collapse are what are worrisome. As their population growth grinds to a halt, and elderly portion of their society becomes larger, it will put more and more pressure on the younger portion of society to support all of their society which will mean either a greatly diminished labor force, or a significant raise in the retirement age. Eventually, unless something is done to take control of the situation it will lead to severe social and economic repercussions.

We often hear about the dangers of overpopulation, like what is happening now in countries like China and India; but on the other side of that coin, are the often undiscussed dangers of underpopulation and advanced aging of society. The two extremes may be very different but share the same dire consequences for their respective societies.

And Japan might benefit if its population declines by ten million or so.

A topic that gets way too little exposure and may be the single most important topic the world needs to face!

If you are interested in FACTS and understanding on this topic I encourage you to watch this video lecture given by a University of Colorado Professor.
