Kathleen Parker DROPPED From 'Parker Spitzer'; 'In The Arena,' New Spitzer 'Ensemble' Show, Announced

Kathleen Parker has been dropped from "Parker Spitzer," and the show is being replaced by a new show called "In The Arena," the network announced Friday.

In a memo to staff, CNN President Ken Jautz said that "In The Arena" would be an "ensemble" show, with "several newsmakers, guests and contributors joining Eliot Spitzer each night." Among the regulars will be former Fox News anchor E.D. Hill and National Review writer Will Cain.

The reason given for Parker's departure was her desire to focus on her syndicated column. In a statement, Parker said, "it was a difficult decision to scale back my column a few months ago and, with the show going in a new direction, it is a good time to move on." But her exit comes after months of bad ratings and reports of heavy tension between her and Spitzer, as well as her and the show's production staff.

In December, it was reported that Parker had threatened to quit the show, and had walked off the set in protest of what she felt was Spitzer's domineering attitude. She acknowledged that there had been "editorial and political tensions" involved in the production of the show.

In January, the Wall Street Journal reported that CNN was considering replacing her.

Spitzer said in a statement that "it has been a joy working with her as a teammate, and I continue to be a huge fan of the wisdom that jumps from her written work and the wit, charm and insight she brings to all that she does."

The full statement from CNN President Ken Jautz, with statements from Parker and Spitzer, below:

I want to share with you some news today regarding our 8pm show. Kathleen Parker has decided to leave the program to focus on her writing, and we have decided to take the show in a new direction. We will be adopting an ensemble format with several newsmakers, guests and contributors joining Eliot Spitzer each night. The new program will be called, "In the Arena," beginning Monday. E.D. Hill and Will Cain will join the program as well others within and outside the CNN family.

We have been pleased with how the 8pm hour has become a centerpiece of substantive, policy-oriented conversation, and we are looking forward to building on that with this new format. Simply put, the new program will look beyond the headlines to analyze and discuss the most important stories of the day. The program will provide context and analysis through balanced and thoughtful discussions and interviews with a wide range of guests and newsmakers who cumulatively represent various points of view.

Kathleen will continue to appear on CNN occasionally to provide her insights and commentary. We thank Kathleen for her hard work and all that she has done to help us launch our new 8pm program. We respect her as a colleague and appreciate her perspective and contributions.

Statement from Kathleen Parker:
After bringing viewers a new 8pm show on CNN, I have decided to return to a schedule that will allow me to focus more on my syndicated newspaper column and other writings. While I am extremely proud of the show we created, and the subject matter and level of discourse Parker Spitzer promoted every night, it was a difficult decision to scale back my column a few months ago and, with the show going in a new direction, it is a good time to move on. I want to thank the viewers who have been so kind with their comments and support. I will continue to appear to contribute and analyze occasionally on CNN and look forward to continuing my relationship with CNN and the many talented individuals I have worked with here.

Statement from Eliot Spitzer:
I wish Kathleen all the best in continuing on with her spectacular career. It has been a joy working with her as a teammate, and I continue to be a huge fan of the wisdom that jumps from her written work and the wit, charm and insight she brings to all that she does.

She should have been out. She was rotten at her job., and nose was too far out of joint. I guess that was from her thinking she was special/not.

Why? Did he try to bone her and she said, "No!"

When was she ever "in"?

I am glad to see her go. Her energy level and command of the topics was no match for Sptizer. That being said, I think they would have been better off to let Spitzer have his own show with his own guests rather than saddle him with a bunch of no-longer-relevant guest co-hosts. Spitzer does not need an "ensemble." In fact, I cringe every time I think of what a waste he is as a news/discussion show host. He should be Attorney General or head of Economics. I don't care how many prostitutes he hires on his own time, I care about his professional abilities. He could run circles around the likes of Holder or Giethner. Yet, because of the faux morality of the American public we are saddled with third string leaders and professional but politically-correct crooks. No one who has the guts and ability to truly lead this country would ever run because non of them are saints and, even though many, if not most, americans lead less than perfect lives, we hypocritically demand that our leaders be either saintly or sufficiently adept at deceiving us to appear so.

She's not representative of today's Republican party in any event. She hated Palin, has serious reservations about the Teabaggers, etc. She's a holdover from the last liberal we had in the White House - Richard Nixon.

Spitzer is awesome on this show -- he has command of discussed topics, extremely well informed. But, PLEASE get rid of the faux has beens. They are an insult to Elliot's intelligence and talent.

I'm disappointed to see Ms. Parker leave the show. Parker & Spitzer was quite an upgrade from Rick Sanchez for example , and I thought she was a good foil for Eliot . I wish Eliot were the chairman of the S.E.C.

As for Will Cain , if I want to see ghoulish hawks I can watch Fox news.

"Remember," Spitzer told Parker. “Not everyone is good at everything."

Kind of like how Spitzer wasn't any good at keeping his penchant for hookers and living a lie.

To honor KO, turned off MSNBC and so had recently tried Parker Spitzer. Yes, she had a poor TV presentation and yes, he is full of himself and overbearing. I decided to try the new Arena tonight. Initially not bad, especially with FZ and then Spitzer allowing the young man to handle an interview. Then it went to hell: ED Hill, the young man and Spitz all talking over each other. Man, I HATE that. Immediately turned it off and won't watch again. Another CNN mis-step. And so it goes....

Watching the reformatted show: "In The Arena".... and I think it's Great ....

Fast Paced and follows a Single Person Political Debate format....
In that Spritzer and one other person... take turns asking the Guest questions s/he could potentially be asked at any Political Debate...

And Spritzer , with his Prosecutorial Experience KNOWS how to ask the necessary Follow Up Questions.....and has OBVIOUSLY Done his Research....

I WANT HIM TO REPLACE CANDY CROWLEY !

Let's put it to rest, Spitzer was seeing a prostitute, a member of one of the oldest professions in the world. Big deal. I don't approve, but that is not the point. He has paid the price and has cleaned up his act, so stop the persecution, get over it, move on.

As to Kathleen, I have been emailing CNN on a regular basis complaining about how ill-fitting she was, and how ill-equipped to deal with serious matters. When she called an aircraft carrier a "boat" and compared the revolution in Egypt to Woodstock, these were just two more nails in her coffin. I'm sure Kathleen will fit in somewhere, I tend to think that writing is her talent, not tv.

It is not the prostitution, it is the hypocracy I cant stand, and it seems to be an epidemic among our legislators, our elected representatives that we are supposed to look to for leadership. It is no wonder that we have no respect for authority, How could we when evil seems to be always rewarded?
