Mississippi Ranked Most Conservative State According To New Gallup Poll

And The Most Conservative State Is...

Mississippi is the most conservative state in the nation, a new Gallup poll finds.

According to the study, 50.5 percent of the state's residents identify themselves as holding conservative political beliefs, the first time that a state has gone over 50 percent and the highest overall number that Gallup has found in similar polls. Idaho clocked in at second with 48.5 percent identification, and Alabama third with 48.3. The top ten most conservative states all had conservative identification numbers of 45 percent or higher.

On the liberal side, the District of Columbia -- not actually a state -- provided the surveys highest results, with 41.1 percent of respondents claiming that they had left political leanings. Vermont came in second place, with 30.5 percent saying that they held liberal political views. No other state had greater than 30 percent liberal identification.

The survey was conducted on a random sample of 182,538 adults, aged 18 and older, and has a margin of error of 1 percent.
