U.S. Imposes Sanctions On Libya

02/25/11 09:05 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is freezing assets held by Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and four of his children in the United States.

The Treasury Department says the sanctions against Gadhafi, three of his sons and a daughter also apply to the Libyan government.

The action was taken under an executive order signed Friday by President Barack Obama.

Obama says the U.S. is imposing unilateral sanctions on Libya because continued violence there poses an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to America's national security and foreign policy.

The president acted after hundreds of Americans were safely evacuated from Libya following days of bloodshed across the country. Militias loyal to Gadhafi have been firing on protesters who have been demanding the Libyan leader's ouster.

Sanctions worked in Iraq. No money to support wmds. Hence no wmds 15 years after Reagan sold wmds to Iraq.

Glad we are freezing assets. Sanctions? Kind of late in the game. And at least an action.

Gonna need more than sanctions.

Peacekeeping forces, at least aerial.

Deny Gaddafi the ability to use the airforce against the people.

It's up to Europe. Maybe France will actually do something.

It's pretty clear by Obama taking the U.S.S Enterprise out the the Mediterranean (and any possible position to do anything about the Libyan Air Force mass murdering civilians) that he intends to make Europe take care of the problem. It's what we all said we wanted, and Europe deserves to be left holding the bag since they so harshly criticize the U.S. in literally everything we take the lead in (right down to aid in Haiti). I hope it works out for the best. The world is used to the U.S. handling everything and back seat driving with 20/20 vision; hopefully they do something before 10's of thousands die. Maybe even that is what's needed.

They have moved the carrier group back into position to cross back through the Suez Canal. This is either the recognition of a strategic blunder or a payoff to the U.N for the sanctions.

If the sanctions are freezing all of the Gadafhi's international personal acccounts and refusing to supply the regime with any hardware or software of oppression, how would this punish the innocent?

Hope the protesters win but if they do not...it will be interesting to see how the Obama administration handles this freeze of assets. Hmmm....

Barack Obama has been running circles around the Republican Tea Party and their pundints (Joe S, Pat Buchanan, Faux news to name a few) and this move is just the lastest that has made them dizzy. Everytime I turn around they are talking about what a weak leader he is and he doesn't have any foreign policy knowledge. They were saying he should come out forceful against Lybia (eventhough U.S. citizens were still there) and he did a terrible job with Egypt. The second U.S. citizens were safe he called for sanctions. I am so glad he doesn't pay attention them, with that crazy Gadhafi ordering the murder of his own people he would not have a problem killing U.S. citizens. And Egypt had a revolution started by their people and appears to be going just fine with our limited interferences.

Pretty much everything he campaigned for he has completed or is working on with limited help from the Republican Tea Party.

It is so nice to have a POTUS who can walk and chew gum at the same time!

The US is freezing Gadhafi's assets and closing the embassy in Libya. Had to look elsewhere to find this information. Not sure how much effect this will have - seems like Gadhafi's on drugs and out of control.

I think the issue is that Gadhafi ISN'T on drugs and is out of control. Suppose those rotten boys of his pour his meds down the toilet?
