What Is A Morning Coat?

According to the Royal Wedding invitations, proper dress attire is "Uniform, Morning Coat or Lounge Suit."

You can read up on lounge suits here, but what is a morning coat?

A morning coat is a type of tailcoat, a coat with a section of it literally cut away (thus why the morning coat is also called a cutaway). It's considered formal day wear, commonly worn at weddings, funerals and baptisms in England, and has a pair of tails behind it.

Dictionary.com defines a morning coat simply as, "a man's cutaway for wear as part of morning dress."

The morning coat can also be seen in the United States occasionally, though there's a movement to do away with such attire.

Some 1,900 guests have been invited to the Royal Wedding. See the official invitation here.
