More Than 270 State Legislators Nationwide Declare Support For Wisconsin Protests

First Posted: 02/25/11 01:14 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- More than 270 state legislators from 44 states and two territories have signed a letter standing with the Democratic state senators in Wisconsin, who left the state to prevent their Republican colleagues from pushing through a controversial budget repair bill.

The battle over collective bargaining in the Midwest has convinced many of these lawmakers that they need to work together more, across state lines, in order to advance labor priorities, they told The Huffington Post.

"Taking away the hard-won rights of nurses and bus drivers and teachers does nothing to create jobs, rebuild the economic prosperity of our states, or strengthen our families," reads the letter, organized by the nonprofit Progressives States Network. "As legislators representing vastly different constituencies in states across the country, we join together to voice our shared desire to work in a constructive manner with all relevant parties to advance a vision for our nation's future that truly ensures the economic security of our communities."

Although overwhelmingly signed by Democrats, the letter's signatories include Anne Donahue and Francis "Topper" McFaun, two Republican state representatives from Vermont.

Georgia state Sen. Nan Orrock (D) is involved with the National Labor Caucus of State Legislators, which claims more than 1,000 members, and she said she has fought against attempts in Georgia to weaken union rights.

"Legislators organizing themselves to effectively stand up for the rights of working families of low- and moderate-income people in the middle class is a positive thing, and that's why I'm very supportive of the leadership that the legislators in Wisconsin and these other states in the Midwest are showing," Orrock told The Huffington Post. "Why should the teachers and kids and firefighters be asked to pay for more tax giveaways for corporations and the wealthy?"

Maine state Rep. Diane Russell (D) took her support for her Democratic counterparts in Wisconsin a step further. Not only did she and some friends go out and join the protests, but she raised more than $3,000 for the trip and provisions for the rallygoers. They gave away more than $900 worth of coffee, hot chocolate and hand warmers, and plan to donate the rest of the money to a fund to "repair the budget." Russell said that while she was in Madison, there were people actually passing a donation bucket around the state capitol.

"I think that we all are starting to realize that we're in this together, and this is a coordinated multi-pronged attacked," Russell said in an interview with The Huffington Post on Friday. "One of the things that we're hearing from my people in the statehouse is that we just can't react fast enough. Every time you turn around, there's something new."

The party campaign organizations representing elected officials at the state level have also waded into the controversy in Wisconsin. On Tuesday, Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Chair and Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal said he was "immensely proud" of the Wisconsin Senate Democrats. "These Senators did not leave the Capitol lightly," he said in a statement. "They faced a choice between watching helplessly as the GOP rammed through a budget that destroys workers' rights, and taking drastic measures to protect those rights. Wisconsin Democrats chose to stand up for working families, and I support and applaud their commitment to this cause."

"While Wisconsin Republicans are making tough decisions and following through on promises to reduce government spending in order to balance the Wisconsin budget, Democrats abdicated their jobs and refused to govern," countered Republican State Leadership Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie in a statement.

Two VT republicans out of 270 signers please!!!! Let's look and see how the states where tax increases are used like IL to try to solve their budget problems are used like they have been in the past without addressing the root cause, spending too much of the public hard earned money on bs caused designed to get people re-elected!!!

Why the limited coveraged of the nationwide protest of destroying collective bargaining? When the tea party protested, there was 24/7 news coverage. Could this be a result of SCOTUS recent decision to categorize corporations as individuals? Money dominates!!!! Let us all work together to change it.

For two years the GOP said no to virtually everything, now the 14 Dems in WI are standing up for the populace and the low info voters are going nuts. Why these folks do not realize that the majority are in the same boat and need to row together is unreal. The GOP is and has been for the rich and large corporations for years. They tout smaller government but when in the majority put forth legislation that uses governement to intervene in everyday life of the people

How about the businesses give back the more than 100 million dollars of tax payer money Walker gave away to them thus creating the fiscal mess in the first place.

If you use the wrong data, you will always get the wrong answer. Walker did not get wis in 3.6 bil in debt. But it is his job to get wis out of debt. You can raise taxes that will cause more businesses to leave or give them incentive to open up shop in wis to supply jobs and built the economy.

that's bs. walker gave away 117 billion in cuts to corporations first thing. one has the challenge the companies saying they will leave. everywhere they go 'we' will want them to pay their taxes. so let them go, someone else will take their place.

Businesses should have to pay their fair share of taxes and shoulder the responsibility of being part of the community it operates in. Why do people always guess that businesses will leave if they have to pay taxes. In the rest of the advanced industrialised world they do not leave and if they did , another business will fill the void.

No more tax breaks to corporations and billionaires, which is the real reason the nation is in a fiscal mess.

Privatization of public workers is what the dingbat Scott Walker is really trying to do .This influance is brought on By the Koch Brothers and their Monopoly driven stand. Walker is a puppet and his method is to pit the population against eachother. These people forgot who were protecting their interests. If this continues rebellion and revolution is next on the agenda, When Walker threatens the population with military force (national guard) he is using ther peoples money to go against themselves.

Remember...what is done to the lest will be done to all. Your narrow mindeness is shortsighted and detrimental to your own well being. Ask yourself, what does the GOP or Tea Party do to augment your economic status. My bet...nothing!!!

AT this point in our history any non rich person in America who still considers themselves a republican is just a f00l. You have nothing to gain now and you never did. You have been nothing but pawns in a big chess game that never favored you.The game is still being played and it still does not work in your favor. If the actions of the GOP/Tbaggers does not convince you then you should go and get yourself a mental evaluation.

It is a fact that you can't trust republicans to do what is right for the majority of the people. I have a little fact that you might want to hear. I know fact's are things you republicans care little about but here is one you can't deny.

Fact, general motors was once the biggest employer in the America. They use to pay people with no college degree enough money that only one person in the household had to work for a paycheck. General motors use to provide great union benefits and real retirement. Today Walmart is the biggest employer in America and they don't pay people a livable wage. You republicans may be happy to work for peanuts at your local walmart supercenter but most of us want better. You better get on line with us and stay on line with us democrats and progressives. You better vote for labor unions and a democratic majority in 2012. It really is our last chance against the oligarchs.

I agree. Fox viewers are being played and don't know it or care. Common sense is not so common. Collective bargaining has enhanced the status of the middle class workers for years.
Negotiations involve two parties....if one party negotiates poorly..it loses. The goal should be an agreement that benefits both to a satisfactory degree.

Article from AP:
"Facts Overshadowed In Debate Over Union Bill"

"As it now stands the budget is now balanced, and Walker os under no legal obilgation to make changes." It goes on to say he will announce Tuesday in his two-year budget plan that he is needing flexibility to deal with more than $1 billion in state aid cuts.
WHERE ARE THE JOBS??????!!!!!!!
Is his plan to destroy thousands of jobs so he can then say, after he has to go back an hire again, that he "created" jobs? Hmmmmm. sounds all too familiar.

I predict by the time the month of may comes around GOVERNOR WALKER, will be governor no more. I think the people of WI will call for a repeal. It seems like the Koch Brothers will loose their bid for DITatorship of this country and governor Walker won't be able to run for dogcatcher. People of WI, rise up and call for repeal of Walker. The guy has gotten a little taste of power and he is as looney as Glenn Beck. Remember what Walker did when he fired the workers in WI when he was a manager huh? Call in a group from out of state headed by a known felon. Those people he fired had to later be paid for time off the job and be reenstated. Wi is still paying for his blunder. The Koch Brothers picked a looser for this job. People of WI, you can send this power hungry ,no college person packing. The choice is yours.

The Koch brothers already hired a lazy, rich man's therapist, a PR firm. PR firms are for those who have a conscience but ignore it. When it gets to be intolerable, they hire a PR firm that does their "self talk" for them, slightly easing the gnawing that..."well, I'm really and okay guy." PR firms are a direct negotiator between the super ego and their ego. This sort of "therapy" is not real therapy because the brothers and others, will not put in the effort and time that a real therapist would require. Plus, they just don't get it....denial.

The law will not allow for it, repeal cannot take place for another year !!! but RESIGNATION can - if we demand his resignation, he will have to do so !! if the whole country is behind us ! we cannot be forced to have this type of governor looking after us !! we have the right to demand his resignation
