Herman Cain Emerges Tea Party 2012 Straw Poll Winner

Herman Cain Tea Party Straw Poll

02/27/11 03:16 PM ET   AP

PHOENIX -- Tea party supporters voting in a straw poll at a national summit favor conservative Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Georgia radio host Herman Cain for president in 2012.

Cain won 22 percent support from the audience in Phoenix at the summit organized by the Tea Party Patriots. He was followed by Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Paul among those casting ballots in person.

Paul had the most votes overall, thanks to a swell of support from online voters. Between the two sets of results, there were about 1,600 votes. Paul gathered more than one-third of them.

Pawlenty and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin each had 9 percent overall. Cain, Paul and Pawlenty were the only three to speak at the three-day summit.

This must be a huge political stunt made by the right. My guess is Republicans wanted to show that they don't have any prejudice views toward minorities by electing a black man. (Doubt their prejudice? I have one response, Faux News.) I see this whole situation as, "What I'm not racist! I have a friend whose black!"......just on a wider scale.

What!!! The "racist" Tea Party chose a Black man in their straw poll? How could this be possible? Further evidence that the Tea Party is racist in another myth invented by the Left.

22% huh? Wow, that is impressive, with the Thrilla from Wasilla busting out with a whopping 9%. How many candidates do they plan on running on the GOP ticket anyway?

They must think that they can make up for what they lack in quality with quantity.

Why come down on Herman Cain. He chooses to be a part of the Grand Ol Party because of his personal conservatism and because of the long history that Republications have had with black people...remember it was the Republican Party that abolished slavery. The Democratic Party opposed freeing the slaves. Emancipation Day finally arrived, thanks to Republican majorities in Congress.

The Teabaggers would vote for Kermit before Herman Cain!!! I'd like to see what weapons they would bring to his rally.

Only problem with your history lesson is you left out the part where the Old Confederacy completely left the Democratic party in the Sixties because of their dislike of the Civil Rights movement. They proceeded to join the GOP by the millions and now form the very heart of the Republican party- you know, the party that thinks Reagan was a far better President than Abraham Lincoln.

Is this how your politicians feel about power. Joe Barton at Tea Party Summit tells us he likes driving a tank - well, sort of.

We need a better brand of politician.

The tea partiers electing a black man in a straw poll as president is quite something, being that they are all racist hillbilly rednecks, don't you think? Obama would have never won without broad support from independent, moderate whites. We elected an African American president. I thought that meant we were past race in America? I thought that was progress? Was I wrong? All I hear in this discussion about Cain is his skin color and I hear almost nothing about his ideas on the issues.

that is simply not true to make such a statement means that you are more focused on Racism and not on the facts at hand I personally do not like the fact that obama had 4 stimulous bills passed and and a promise unemployment would not go above 8% it is above 9% not to mention those whose unemployment benifits have run out 4 stimulous and it is not working it also took him 56 days to act on a gulf oil spill he preferred to play golf it does not make me a racist when his policies are an utter failure. fort hood shooting? lets throw a party gulf oil ? lets lets play 3 rounds of golf and go on 2 vacations i serously dont think the president is serous about the job he has taken ... but in no means makes me a racist

What's amazing in this discussion is how the democrats are acting like serious black presidential candidates have been numerous in their ranks over the years. Besides the candidacy of the laughably un-electable Jesse Jackson, and Obama in 2008, there were none. The dems have a similarly poor record as the repubs when it comes to recognizing and fostering black presidential candidates. So please stop taking the moral high ground on race issues, because your record is almost as bad. You are beating the repubs by one election cycle. Big deal.

Not true.
Ever hear of Channing Phillips? In 1968, he did get 68 electoral votes.
Then there was Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. There was also Carol Mosely-Braun, and Al Sharpton.
Whether you feel any of these people could have been elected or not, can you name any black person other thatn Alan Keyes who have been considered by the Repubs?

...' hmm.. are you saying the the names you have mentioned were serious presidential candidates.?
Or are they simply black candidates the democrats ' considered' , and then rolled on the floor laughing.
If the republicans ever presented such tokenism, they'd be accused of racism.
...' Ever hear of Channing Phillips? In 1968, he did get 68 electoral votes....'
He got 68 electoral votes ?? HAHA now you've got me ROFL !!

You said, "Besides the candidacy of the laughably un-electable Jesse Jackson, and Obama in 2008, there were none." Wrong,

Shirley Chisholm, an outstanding member of congress from New York's Twelfth District, made history in 1972 as the first black woman to run for president, 35 years before HIllary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Hey Herman, congrats on your straw poll....that and quarter (or 3 dollars at starbucks) will buy you a cup of coffee. But when the rubber meets the road, don't count on too many bagger votes. I wouldn't quit my day job if I were you...........
